Merya Conversion Sanitary Building / BARAKI

Built in the late 1980s, the Gruyère rest area was designed in the spirit of post-modernism, reconfiguring vernacular materials and architectural elements to form a complex of several buildings, including the public toilets building, which is the subject of this conversion. The existing building has a masonry base, mainly made with reinforced concrete, with a facing of local river pebbles visible from the outside. A glued-laminated timber frame forms a 2-slope roof. This triangular volume is laterally offset, creating a covered square in front of the entrance to the toilet blocks. To support the loads, four oblique beams are extended to the ground, providing impressive views of Lac de Gruyère and the Fribourg Pre-Alps.

The house is located on the edge of the Sarine River, amidst goats, sheep, chickens, and rabbits. In order to preserve the maximum amount of available land, a small tower is envisioned. The initial project envisaged two buildings corresponding to the detailed plan of the area.

Windig park is located on a private property in Fribourg. It contains a manor house built in 1830, which was originally a hunting lodge. The park is currently in a state of degradation; maintaining its 30 hectares requires significant funding.

The project is the result of a competition won in 2001 for a new theater in the city center of Fribourg. The project was completed at the end of 2011. The auditorium provides seats for 700 spectators.

Dominique Perrault Wins Competition for Esplanade Tower in Fribourg

Dominique Perrault Architecture, the French practice recently awarded with the opportunity to build a tower called The Blade in Seoul as part of Daniel Libeskind’s master plan, has now been announced as winner of a concept/construction international competition for the Esplanade Tower in downtown Fribourg, Switzerland. The high rise is part of regeneration project of the Swiss Federal Railways at the site of the former Pilettes Station.
