Tucked between two classic residential buildings, a recently completed infill by ADEPT provides some much-needed breathing space in this small apartment complex. By adding just 15 m² for 6 of the 7 apartments, the infill solves the need for 'that extra room' for the families that share the property. At the same time, the private courtyard was transformed with permeable surfaces and a landscape design focused on urban biodiversity and play.

If we want to achieve a sustainable future, we cannot rely on only building sustainable buildings going forward. We need to have a visionary method of transforming and adapting existing buildings to meet our changing needs. Ørsted Gardens is an example of a project that brings a generic renovation to a new level, improving the visual and social environment for residents and visitors alike. Ørsted Gardens transformed a dilapidated building that was often referred to as among the ugliest in its neighborhood. The original building (and many similar to it) was erected in the ’60s at the height of a fascination with rationality, industrial processes, and efficiency in the Danish building industry. The building was sleek and unwelcoming and didn’t age with a modicum of grace.

The 3200 m2 Ku.Be House of Culture in Movement was designed for the municipality of Frederiksberg as a focal point for both the immediate community and also the wider area of Copenhagen; one that the people themselves could take ownership of and that would evolve its programme based on the specific wants and needs of its users. The project is a new typology, developed out of the response to a brief that solely asked for a building that would bring people together and improve the quality of life. In reply MVRDV and ADEPT answered with one that blends theatre, sport and learning into a space where body and mind are activated to promote a more healthy life for everyone, regardless of age, ability or interest; creating links between people that wouldn’t otherwise connect with each other.
