Children encounter space differently from adults. For them, the world is not yet rationalized into function and circulation but is experienced through emotion and curiosity. Where adults may navigate rooms through habit, children inhabit them through immediacy. A patch of sunlight becomes an event. The curve of a hallway invites wandering. The sound of footsteps on wood or the softness of fabric beneath fingertips is not background but information. What adults may dismiss as peripheral moments quietly mediates their sense of safety, autonomy, belonging, and possibility. Architecture is an opportunity for pedagogy to become physical.

The formerly vacant elementary school in Chicago’s local St. Laurence neighborhood has been reimagined to redeem indoor and outdoor spaces, making it a cultural hub. Set to open in 2024, the building's adaptive reuse expanded the program and the landmark into a place of exploration, entrepreneurship, and creative education.

Located in Anting new town of Shanghai's Jiading district, Tongji University Experimental Elementary School project consists of teaching buildings, an administration building, a canteen, a gym, and elevated passages. Following the context of the original site, classrooms, offices and a sports space are connected in series through courtyards of different scales and different kinds of enclosures according to functional demands. The design of the architectural ensemble as well as its buffer spaces are well integrated into the townscape.
