Located in downtown Edmonton's rapidly evolving Warehouse Campus district, O-day'min Park transforms a former surface parking lot into a vibrant new public space. Commissioned by the City of Edmonton, the park helps catalyze the neighbourhood's transition from low-intensity industrial lands into a dense, mixed-use, residential community. The park and its pavilion represent early, highly visible public investments intended to establish identity, support downtown living, and signal a new standard for the public realm.

The Diwan is a year-round pavilion and event space for the University of Alberta Botanic Gardens and the final piece to complete the 4.8-hectare Aga Khan Garden, Alberta. The site of the pavilion was designated in the original concept plan for the Garden, inaugurated in 2018. In addition to providing multi-use functionality, the pavilion was to resonate with its rich surroundings and extend the themes of the Garden, a contemporary interpretation of Islamic landscape architecture in a northern climate and context. The pavilion was designed to complement the spirit of the Garden’s design, heritage, and experience. The term diwan has varied historical definitions, and here implies a space for meeting, cultural exchange, and celebration.

Revitalizing a vacant building, on a prominent corner of the Quarters neighborhood in downtown Edmonton, Ociciwan Contemporary Art Collective (OCAC) will provide a physical home for local Indigenous Canadian modern art. The building’s new multifaceted mirrored façade is symbolic of the collective’s commitment to innovation and creativity; the ever-changing reflections are a commentary on how the building and the art within can lead to shifting contemporary dialogues around indigenous traditions, breaking normative expectations. A secondary reading implies a reinterpretation of Métis beadwork, the facade as tectonic adornment.

Located in a currently underserved neighborhood, CO*LAB (Community Arts Laboratory) adapts a modest existing building into a critical piece of infrastructure for the local arts community. Faced with a limited budget, the design team worked through challenging existing conditions to meet the ambitious programmatic needs of the tenant, a not-for-profit arts group. Spaces created include a gallery, black box theatre, workshops, studios, and a café. An additional goal, outlined by the owner, was for the project to engage the street and the community in an authentic manner that current and future residents of the area would embrace.

Reconciling demanding technical requirements with simple and rigorous architecture, KATG elevates a conventionally utilitarian building and honors its important role within a growing, equitable, sustainable, and resilient contemporary city. Functional efficiency and high sustainability are matched by formal refinement, historic preservation, and public art, enriching both the lives of the people who work there and the wider community it serves.

The new South Haven Centre for Remembrance creates a new non-denominational facility for the City of Edmonton. The primary objective of the design was to memorialize moments in time and spatially capture the quality of the seasons through the interplay of light, shadow, and darkness. The design features a symbolic 13-meter tower that emerges from the prairie landscape, making reference to the existing gravesites, monuments, columbaria, and the latent memory that they embody. Our memory of visiting a cemetery is marked by time; the position of the sun, the quality of light, and the weather on that particular day. For some, it may be a solitary visit for a ceremony, for others it may be experienced through ritual visits which span the rest of their lives.

Orphaned from the North Saskatchewan River by intense urbanization in the 1960s, the ravine is a remnant of a riparian prairie ecosystem that once characterized the Edmonton area. Flanked by a residential street to the west and the orphaned ravine to the east, the site is ideal for a library, both accessible and connected to nature.

Its 560 photovoltaic panels provide 80% of the building’s electrical requirements. The building is connected to the city’s power grid, returning excess power on sunny days. The design incorporates both insulated triple-glazed and quadruple-glazed systems. The open floor plates are naturally lit by comfortable north daylight. The north windows require no blinds and the building requires little artificial light during the summer months. The ends of the building feature large thermally-separated balconies and solar screens to control sunlight.

MacEwan University’s new urban centre for arts and culture, Allard Hall, creates an elegant entrance landmark to its City Centre Campus in Edmonton, AB. The building’s focal point is its central, multi-storey double atria crossed by dramatic angled pedestrian bridges linking each of its five floors, from the ground to the top floor where natural light pours in via clerestoreys.
