Located on a former sports ground at the northern edge of the city's Great Forest, Nagyerdő, the 23,000 m² museum is being developed in collaboration with Vikár és Lukács Építés Stúdió, Museum Studio, and TYPSA. The new institution will replace the existing museum in Budapest, supporting the government's vision to establish Debrecen as a regional hub for education and culture by 2030. Commissioned by the Museum and the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, the new building will house permanent and temporary exhibition halls, educational and research facilities, public amenities, and back-of-house spaces.

The building is located in the former rural outskirts of Debrecen. The site was formed by merging three narrow parcels – this defined the design concept of the house. The building was divided into three main volumes. The middle unit serves as the main „family” area of the villa, providing a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. It also connects the more private living spaces of the northern unit to the kitchen, study and library in the southern volume. A similar tripartite division of the interior functions is a noticeable characteristic of the century-old houses in the inner city.

The concept of this house is based on both the traditions of early modernism in Debrecen and the simple, clear and logical construction of rural houses. The composition is open and closed at the same time, as the mass of the building is basically following a rectangular shape defined by the local architectural regulations, while the inner space opens up towards a garden enclosed by a pure white wall. The meeting of the inner and outer space creates a less bound, opened up transitional area. The covered veranda that surrounds the southern and western side of the house is a contemporary interpretation of the porches seen in old Hungarian farmhouses and mansions. The slidable curtain walls of this veranda generate a constantly changing, dynamic space between garden and house and make it possible to either open up or hide the inside space. The house is totally closed on the street side and gradually opens up towards the backyard, ending in a terrace opening from the living room. The back wall of the living room is a huge glass surface, intersected by the white brick wall of the fireplace.

Actually, the latest building designed by Péter Kovács, architect from Debrecen (city in east side of Hungary, 240 km. fare from Budapest) does not quite fit into the genre detailed in the introduction as the house is not a family house but a studio. However, a parallel can still be drawn since the building is a deep, personal, self-reflexive work of art, which reflects the role of the architect, layered as it is.

Tero Auvinen, UEFA consultant, named our new Stadium after Robin Hood referring to it’s amazing location in the middle of the forest. Is it really possible to set a modern football stadium in the heart of the woods? How can such a monumental building adapt to the human scale and provide a people-friendly environment? What is the design concept by which the stadium is able to refl ect the local traditions, national prides and values to create an unforgettable, unique atmosphere and sense of space? How to build a sport venue time- and cost-effectively with high quality and to operate it in a sustainable manner? The Stadium of Nagyerdo designed by the Hungarian architect, Peter Bordas, gives an interesting response to these questions.
