Casa TA begins with a roof. Not a slab, not a plane; a ribbon of white concrete that folds, narrows, and overlaps itself with a logic closer to origami than to conventional construction. Its sharp edges and generous overhangs establish the project's central argument from the street: that visual weight and apparent lightness are not opposites, but instruments to be played simultaneously.

The project is located in Cumbayá, a neighborhood that has suffered a great demographic expansion due to the growth of the city towards the valleys. The lot has a steep slope and is located in a developing suburban area. For this reason, it was decided to divide the project into two blocks, separated by an open intermediate space that helps maintain the idea of an isolated house. Three platforms are generated that follow the natural topography of the terrain. The living blocks are placed on the front and rear platforms, while the vertical circulation and the common gardens are located on the intermediate platform, which generates an expansion between both blocks and creates a void that articulates the entire project. In this void, the communal circulation is placed, which is totally open and functions as a place for people to meet.

The Breakroom in the Garden was born when an international environmental consulting company, whose headquarters in the Cumbayá valley in the city of Quito, needed a break space for its workers. The client’s main requirement was the conservation of the existing vegetation in the backyard of the offices, where the project was to be located.

The site selection was a long and very important process because it required a space that would foster expectations for the project. A large area was required on the outskirts of Quito but directly related to the city. These objectives were translated into a hill in the area of Rancho San Francisco – Cumbaya. The location of the site implies a clear and strong visual presence for the developments in the area, and also privileged views of the Cumbaya valley and its surroundings.
