        <![CDATA[<p>In many <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/1041759/when-modernism-meets-local-resistance-housing-and-urban-friction-in-latin-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Latin American cities</a>, peripheral neighborhoods have historically had less access to the resources that make <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/1039699/reclaiming-the-street-alejandra-ferrera-on-architecture-and-urban-life-in-honduras" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urban life</a> more than just livable. Housing, transportation, and public services are the usual markers of that gap. But there is another gap that is harder to quantify: the absence of places where people can gather, learn, rest, and participate in collective life. When those spaces do not exist, the city not only fails to provide a service. It fails to acknowledge a presence.</p>]]>

The transformation of this abandoned fish feed mill and ice storage facility into an art space is a testament to the power of adaptive reuse and preservation. In time for the Sharjah Biennial 15, the Kalba Ice Factory was opened to the public on 8 February 2023 as a venue for the Biennial. </p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The Sámi National Theater Beaivváš and Sámi <a href="/tag/high-school">High School</a> and Reindeer Husbandry School are two of the most important cultural institutions of Sápmi, a region in northern <a href="/tag/norway">Norway</a>, Sweden, and Finland traditionally inhabited by the Sámi people. To strengthen the position of the two institutions, a project was initiated in June 2021 to create a shared cultural and educational facility. A design proposal by <a href="https://70n.no/?utm_medium=website&amp;utm_source=archdaily.com" target="_blank">70°N arkitektur</a>, in collaboration with <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/office/snohetta">Snøhetta</a> and artist and architect <a href="https://www.archdaily.com/tag/joar-nango">Joar Nango</a>, was chosen following a competition. The building, also known as Čoarvemátta, is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by 2024.</p>]]>
