The University of Bío-Bío, on its Concepción Campus, has completed the first 3D-printed construction carried out in Chile and the southern cone of Latin America. Raising a small surveillance cabin, which tests the new additive manufacturing technology that promises to revolutionize construction, and demonstrates the advances of the UBB in this technological development. By creating a mixture optimized for printing with local materials and creating construction elements with an industrial robot, which now expands its reach with a large-format printer that allows for complete houses.

The family considered the demolition of the existing house and the preservation of the vegetation, particularly a 7m high palm tree, located at the centre, that went on to determine the project of the house in the site. This was developed particularly from two volumes of one and two levels, set back from the street that configured a more hermetic façade towards the public space, providing privacy, and simultaneously a greater openness towards the interior and familiar activities.

This space is a witness of assembly's, parties, expositions and has always been the heart of the school. In the year 2006 the building was remodeled and due to the changes the cafeteria hall lost its character, turning into an ambiguous space that ended up disappearing in 2015 leaving a unoccupied place that left the heart of the school empty of its activities.

Commissioned by the development corporation CORFO Chile, it involves creating a pavilion that can accommodate activities and exhibitions related to the productive and creative sector of the city. Taking into account that this is an emerging sector and one of its main problems is the lack of connection between them, we propose a space able to gather, receive and visualize this meeting in a high concurrency urban place. Having completed its period allotted in the public space, the pavilion will be dismounted and transported to the Concepcion Municipal Center of creation and collaborative work C3, for other program activities and use of this space.

It is more comparable with cast iron, another material cast in moulds, in which through long experience shapes have been developed which lead easily and gently from one constructive element to the next without any shock or sudden break. It is the overall view which, integrating the parts into the whole, conditions these lovely shapes.” (Robert Maillart, 1938)

This exercise was never as explicit as the conciliation required by the formalities of the case: a suburban dwelling in a neighborhood of detached houses. As the rest of the residences, this was a big house in a plot too small for such a size; a house that had to look like one (for the sake of the neighbors mental peace); a house made of “material” (a local expression referring to the unquestioned solidity of concrete constructions) that would never age (for the peace of mind of the owners).

It has aprox. 220.000 inhabitants, but its threshold spans reaches some 630.000 people. The highlights of its economy are the elaboration of steel and the wood industry, both on wide exporting booms. We were asked to design a branch of the ‘Consorcio Nacional de Seguros', National Insurance Consortium, in a corner site, in front of the only historic and antique church in Concepción, whose façade had been unfortunately reconstructed after an earthquake. Furthermore, it had a front fenced square that impoverished its quality and public character.
