        <![CDATA[<p>On a limited 84-square-meter plot in Tokyo's central district, kooo Architects focused on the "gaps" within the urban fabric to design Hotel Rakuragu — a 9-story hotel with open views despite its compact site. Terrace: The area is surrounded by typical mixed-use buildings in downtown Tokyo, lacking scenic vistas or uniform design regulations for neighboring structures in height, width, or materials. Unlike typical Tokyo hotels that omit balconies to maximize room space, kooo Architects observed the surrounding buildings and oriented each floor's openings toward urban gaps, creating balconies in varying directions. Each room features a unique balcony design, allowing guests to experience diverse views from different floors. This approach resulted in a building that appears as a white cuboid carved with irregular voids, forming a rhythmic façade.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>This project involved preserving and restoring a modernist building built in 1967 in Ginza, <a href="/tag/tokyo">Tokyo</a>, known as an example of Metabolism architecture. This building is a distinctive work by Kenzo Tange, one of Japan's most celebrated architects, who devised a creative new form for a small site located in a place that symbolizes Japan's post-war period of rapid economic growth. The cylindrical core at the center of the building houses vertical circulation routes such as stairs, elevators, and piping. The office spaces protrude outwards from the core, giving it a distinctive appearance.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p><em>The Tallest Wooden Skyscraper in Japan – </em>We designed a 12-story commercial complex on Ginza Sotobori Dori Street in Tokyo. The top four floors are wood-framed, giving the steel-framed structure the appearance of a wooden box atop an office building. The lower and upper floors are commercial, while the middle floors house offices and tenants. The basement is reinforced concrete, the first eight floors are steel-framed, and the upper four floors are wooden. Cedarwood from Tama, Tokyo, was used for the exterior and interior finishes.</p>]]>

Yaesu, the business district to the east of the station, was a center for logistics by canal in the Edo era. Today, it has become a popular district with some of the best development potential in the country, with several major redevelopment projects taking root. The building bridges Tokyo Station and the Yaesu area and acts as a branding hub for Yanmar, a company that develops technology for “food production” and “energy conversion” worldwide. Its exterior and interior environment are designed to make it a suitable face for the company in this station-front location.</p>]]>

The Artizon Museum, located on the lower floor, opened on January 18, 2020. The approximately 150-m high Museum Tower Kyobashi housing high-grade tenant offices and an art museum is located in Kyobashi in front of Tokyo Station. Honoring the philosophy of the founder of Bridgestone Tire (present Bridgestone) Shojiro Ishibashi who built the Bridgestone Museum of Art in 1951—forerunner to the Artizon Museum and a state-of-the-art structure at the time—this client-collaborative design was intended to create a new era of architecture embodying the social environment and cutting-edge technologies of 2020.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>The goal of this project was to dismantle an old "kura" (Japanese traditional warehouse) in Kawagoe, transport the components to the site and reassemble them to create a new space. Instead of simply reassembling the structure on the site, the client's plan was to build a new structure on the site and reassemble the structural framework of kura inside it. We were concerned that it might end up looking like an old folk house displayed in a museum, and started developing ideas for the project while questioning its fakeness.</p>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p>First impression. The site, located in an anonymous alley near the one of Ginza’s main streets, was abandoned for three years when the project started. With a front to the street of only 2.7 meters, and the tall buildings surrounding it as walls to its boundaries, if you were to look up from the inside of the site, you could see a perfect L shaped fraction of the sky. This particular location and its narrow shape suggest the idea of going from an alley to another alley. This feeling, as well as the importance of the natural zenith light, are the two ideas that triggered the design of this project.</p>]]>
