The continued renewal of Chongqing's Dian Ce Cun district is organically layering urban vibrancy, neighborhood vitality, and high-quality living into a denser, more dynamic model of contemporary life. In 2021, China Resources Land and Hongkong Land jointly entered Chongqing's Guanyinqiao area, making Guanchen a key urban renewal project in the city's core. As the final chapter of the Guanchen series, Wangyunchao spans over 60 mu and serves not only as a major residential development in the city center, but also as an exploration of new urban living models in the context of "second urbanization."

1. Intervening Between City and Lake.
By the lake of Yihe Park in northern Chongqing, we transformed a waterfront pavilion into Lago, an Italian country restaurant—using breathable timber and lightweight wave-like metal. Tucked among cedar trees, the restaurant faces a bright lake. Its name comes from the Italian word for "lake." We first imagined it as Thoreau's cabin by Walden Pond—crisp water, deep shade, and winding paths. But Yihe Park is "nature within the city." So the question became: how to bring that Walden-like stillness and clarity into the architectural narrative.

Located within the historic Mountain Alley in Chongqing, this project transforms a small rooftop space along the steep stone steps of the old city into a new public gathering place. Through the insertion of two lightweight pavilions and a pink bar installation, the design introduces a subtle contemporary layer while preserving the atmosphere of the historic alley. Instead of leaving the rooftop completely open as before, these volumes are arranged to create a gentle sense of enclosure. Through their positioning, the structures frame views toward the surrounding city while shaping different zones for sitting, resting, and wandering. The rooftop becomes a place where visitors can pause, move slowly, and experience the city from above—almost like strolling through a small garden in the air.

Nested within the layered folds of this mountain city, RICHAUS inserts itself as a contemporary geometric volume engaged in a dialogue with nature, embedded into the vast, complex terrain of Southwest China. Throughout the design process, Vari Architects persistently explored how to create an interlaced condition between architecture and nature, and among people—essentially, a relationship and an interface—within the context of urban regeneration. Through a new architectural order, we aimed to reinvest significance into an overlooked office building within the urban fabric, transforming it into a public cultural hub that connects culture, community, industry, and commerce—thereby pointing toward a more open, abundant, and continuously evolving community center.

The First Act of Organization: Tracing the Trajectory of Life — The existing three-story building sits on terraced terrain, accessible from both north and south. Years of habit had formed a vertical functional zoning: the second floor, connecting to the vehicular road in the southern community, served as the main entrance, housing the living room, garage, guest room, balcony, and atrium; the first floor, backing against the hillside retaining wall and facing the rear garden, connected to the pedestrian secondary entrance and consisted of the dining room, kitchen, and entertainment room; the third floor was the most private sleeping area, containing two bedrooms and a study. After continuous discussion and comparison of schemes, this zoning was retained in the renovation. The thinking focused on how to release the spatial potential of the house to become a catalyst for the evolution of future life.

Its complex topography overlaps with a dense infrastructural network, where elevated roads, steep terrain, and waterfronts together form a highly charged urban landscape. Located at the convergence of these conditions, the Luxi Lake Café is conceived as a small architectural insertion that responds to the relationships between urban infrastructure, natural geography, and everyday public life through a light and restrained spatial intervention.

Sitting at the Lijia Intelligent Park in the municipality of Chongqing, the 15,000 square meters Lijia Smart Hall is expected to become a central stage for the annual Smart China Expo, a professional event to encourage global exchanges of smart technologies and smart industry. Envisioning an iconic architecture piece that both lives up to its role and is fully integrated with surrounding lavish vegetation, the Gensler team developed the design focusing on eight principles—simplicity, relevance, timelessness, distinction, scalability, technology, experience, and connectivity.

Chongqing is a "fantasy" city built in the mountains. The cascading buildings make up the city's special landscape. Our project is to create a temporary building in the city. Behind the project, the site is modern high-rise buildings, and in front is the architectural heritage - Huguang Guild Hall. The landscape in the distance is the Dongshuimen Bridge and the Yangtze River. The front is history and nature, and the back is the magical city. I hope that our new buildings should be integrated into this fantastic and historical city.
