The project is situated in Xueshan Village, Changping District, Beijing, at the junction between urban and rural areas. It only takes about 30 minutes to drive to the city's Second Ring Road from here. This location is considered conveniently accessible in Beijing, a megacity. The homeowner is a fellow alumni of mine. His building plot in the suburban area of Beijing had been left unused for many years. In 2022, he conceived the idea of utilizing it, though the specific manner of how to do so remained uncertain. I remember during our first discussion, he mentioned three possibilities: (1) using it as a second residence for himself, with the possibility of his parents occasionally staying there; (2) converting it into his company's office space after three years; or (3) renting it out if no concrete plans were finalized. Therefore, our design process began by systematically analyzing the corresponding relationships between these three different functional requirements and the spatial layout.

The project is located in the large urban residential area of Huilongguan in Beijing and includes two functional sections: a sports and fitness center and a cultural and arts center. The completion of the project addresses the lack of cultural and sports facilities in the high-density residential area of Huilongguan and is one of the key projects of Beijing's "Huitian Action Plan." The project serves 55 surrounding communities, benefiting over 400000 people. In conjunction with the sports park to the north, it aims to create an "open and inclusive" indoor and outdoor activity space for citizens. The project integrates the concept of development into the venue planning, providing a high-quality space for cultural and sports activities for the regional residents.

This architectural endeavor embodies a poetic symphony of change and diversity, a dwelling that hosts three generations, a family of nine. While the dwelling primarily cradles the two elders, it metamorphoses into a lively space during weekends, festivals, and the radiant embrace of summer, welcoming the laughter of children. This 400-square-meter place should serve old and young, every family member, and also a place that allows humans to find solace in the company of others. Rather than crafting a singular, imposing structure, our aim is to create a reminiscence of the intricate scenes portrayed in the paintings of Peter Bruegel, where every detail weaves its own unique story into the fabric of existence. In a world dominated by standardized living spaces, how do we provide a realm where diverse forms, scales, and the interplay of light and shadow bring forth a rich tapestry of life? Our exploration unfolds through staggered sequences, unveiling possibilities for a living narrative that thrives on variation.
