As Beck Family Estates' first winery developed outside of South Africa, Abbott Claim is a thoughtful expression in the built form of the rolling hills and beauty of the Yamhill-Carlton region. The project features custom elements such as a living roof, a semi-circular barrel cellar, and an underground wine library lit from an oculus above. Large canopies provide weather protection and screening for the crush pad and mobile bottling line.

Carlton Cottage sought to re-imagine a tired single storey house on a small allotment into a new home for our young family. We resolved to address practical issues relating to water management, light quality, and thermal performance while taking cues from the existing cottage to arrange the home within its historical context. Intertwined with this pragmatism was an approach based on adaptability, regeneration, and an emphasis on spatial quality over material excesses.

A heavenly plant-filled atrium brings life, light and connection into the heart of this family home. From the outside, Casa Atrio has the character of an Italianate-style terrace, intertwining decorative classical architecture with a Victorian-era home. Ornate and picturesque, the style is unique to Melbourne when the city was fuelled by the prosperity and optimism of the gold rush late nineteenth-century. But step inside, and the light-filled home has the charm of a classic Parisian apartment with elegant detailing, custom furniture and spaces for family and friends to gather.

They looked forward to new spaces filled with natural light, all year round living, and the ability to connect visually with their surrounds. The local street character reveals rows of terrace houses, snug tightly alongside each other. Properties are narrow in width and short in depth. With the standard kitchen, dining and living space requirements, together with an ambitious 4 bedrooms and 2 x bathrooms, the challenge of going “up a level” and addressing the overlooking and overshadowing of neighbors cannot be underestimated.
Approach
For Carlton Terrace, we set out to explore contrasts in volume and texture.
