What do lightweight materials bring to public space with an ethical, ecological, and non-extractive design principle? Various textile textures offer a point of entry, being closer to the body than heavy conventional structural materials. Through its flexibility and responsiveness, it enables a form of soft enclosure rather than a fixed boundary in architectural space. Responding to minimal environmental stimuli, the fabric brings continuous movements into space. When layered or assembled, it produces gradations of density, depth, and enclosure, while recent innovative fabrication technologies extend the possibilities of its form and structural durability.

The street façade of this 1870s townhouse reveals nothing of the architectural interventions that were used to transform it into a contemporary home. Once the room-high door of the entrance hall is opened, you are surprised by the openness and architectural interventions. The original main volume was retained and extended with two diagonally stacked glass volumes. In the process, each intervention was accentuated in concrete or green colours. The kitchen with the void and the light-flooded central stairwell are the eye-catchers of this design, in addition to the bathroom with a view of the historic city centre of Bruges.

Common Thread is an immersive passage made from a 3D knit textile connecting a previously inaccessible 19th-century monastery courtyard in Bruges back to the city. Inspired by the medieval city’s lace-making tradition, the installation uses an innovative woven fabric to create an intricate spatial experience in a wave-like tunnel. It draws visitors in, emerging into a sunlit courtyard and engaging in a serendipitous exploration of history, craft, and technology. The transformed garden contains multiple worlds, threading past and future, form and matter, memory and space, against the rich backdrop of the monastery's surroundings.

Architecture remains in constant tension with natural forces. Designed around gravity, climate, and time, buildings are always part of larger systems. Throughout the world, designers have tried to mitigate natural forces by constructing hybrid spaces and structures, artificial areas where nature meets the manmade. Embodying this relationship, canals reflect a desire to direct nature and its flows. Today, these fluid spaces are opening up to new programs, projects that explore modern life and urban vitality.

Care lab is a part of the university building Vives North in Bruges. The building is completed in 2009 and designed by De Vloed architects. It consists of three annexes: a relatively closed concrete plinth, a three-story building, and a floating roof. Characteristic to this school building is the frequent use of exposed concrete for load-bearing walls and floors.
