Nestled on the three-sided lakefront central island of Beijing's Chaoyang Park, the 2008 Olympic-era outdoor Shell Theatre has completed its renewal by DUTS design. Aligned with the Liangma River cultural waterfront masterplan, the project adopts a low-intervention "10% interface renewal" strategy, eschewing full demolition to redefine the symbiosis between performance venue, public park and waterfront landscape.

The "Train Street," located in the core area of Beijing's 798·751 Park, originally served as the coal yard and railway terminus for the 751 Factory. It was later repurposed into an underground garage, and after a dozen decommissioned train carriages were placed along the tracks on both sides of the garage's rooftop plaza, the site was opened to the public. However, the space subsequently suffered from a loss of vitality. Studio NOR utilized a lightweight, modular micro-renovation strategy, successfully transformed this passive, corridor-like passage into a vibrant community destination.

1. Window and Landmark - The Beijing Friendship Store, located in the First Embassy District along the eastern extension of Chang'an Avenue, was the first large-scale special supply store established in China to serve foreign diplomatic personnel. As a unique window for Sino-foreign exchanges during the planned economy era, it gradually opened to the public only since the late 1980s. A symbolic landmark to generations of Beijing citizens, the store failed to adjust itself to the new Chinese consumerist market after the millennium, and its decline led to a comprehensive renovation started in 2023, in which the former service backyard was transformed into a commercial park, with Jetlag Books being the sole bookstore tenant.

Neighbors of the 18th floor must use the staircase at the corner to reach their homes. So, although it is a penultimate floor, it feels as if it is at the very top. Looking out from the window, tucked away behind trees, the embassy compound stretches across two city blocks, its low structures crouching close to the ground and barely visible. The nearest high-rises retreat to Sanlitun Street, about 1.5 kilometers away. With no obstructions, the room is bathed in dazzling sunlight all year round, and it also enjoys breezes filtered through the dense canopy of trees in the embassy district.

Inside the Beijing Electromechanical Institute compound, trendy shops and creative studios sit alongside abandoned factories, while stylish young people walk beneath withered ivy. Deja Vu Recycle Store calls this neighborhood home—a place defined by striking contrasts, where old and new intertwine. The first time we saw the site, we were struck by a sense of ruin. Dead vines crawled up the exterior walls, tangled wires hung loose, a long-abandoned garbage shed stood in the corner, and a massive old chimney dominated the center. But as we passed through the foyer and ascended to the second floor, the symmetrical windows on the north and south sides opened up, along with the skylights above, letting sunlight pour in. The entire space brightened, feeling like a bustling old railway station from another era.

On the urban landscape, architecture is never an isolated entity, but rather a spatial vehicle that engages in a profound dialogue with its site, its people, and the spirit of the city. It has long transcended its physical functions to become a vessel containing the city's soul. Located in Qinghe Town, Haidian District, Beijing, the INNNG International Talent Community is a vivid embodiment of this philosophy. The design of its architecture stems precisely from the unique characteristics of the INNNG project site in Haidian, Beijing—a uniqueness born from comprehensively addressing various boundary factors. This multifaceted residential project for young people not only confronts the challenges posed by the special terrain and complex urban environment but also, through an architectural form that "embraces and coexists," creates a vibrant landmark that stimulates innovation, fosters interaction, and integrates into the city.

Beijing National Day School is renowned for its student-led, open and free campus culture. Every year, students initiate ten campus improvement proposals, which receive full support from the school authorities. The former School Uniform Center, located in the northeast corner of the campus, was listed on the 2023 Annual Ten Practical Campus Improvement Projects due to student concerns regarding space experience and frequency of use.Originally built as an underground concrete fish pond, the building had undergone numerous extension and partition, resulting in a chaotic and disorganized function: the underground bookstore and print shop were dim, damp and poorly ventilated; the ground-floor uniform storage and exhibition area was cramped and enclosed, standing in stark contrast to the natural beauty of the surrounding pine woods. Seizing this renovation opportunity, Origin Architect seeks to revitalize the building under pines and sunshine, metamorphosing it into a free realm that stirs students' sensibility and creative thinking.

The earliest impressions of the place were, on the one hand, the many art installations in its public plaza areas, and on the other hand, its friendliness toward children and the community, with spaces for play and pause. Therefore, being invited this time to design and build a community book pavilion in the plaza felt more like returning to a place once encountered in everyday life and responding once again to the question of what kind of public space is truly needed here.

The project embodies a rare facet of public space development within Beijing's urban renewal—one characterized by a populist and thematic approach—and reflects an entirely novel model for the adaptive reuse of underutilized urban sites that has yet to be fully explored.

This is a residence building designed for a multi-generational family. Due to the climate of northern China, this house adopts an introverted design strategy, with a central light well organizing the family space. Exterior windows on different facades, as well as large and small skylights create a soft, pleasant interior light experience. The floor plan is derived from the classic nine-square grid. This basic form contains closely related and independent components, which can well complete the ritual transition from public activity space to private residence. The spatial pattern of the nine-square grid is also very consistent with the Chinese cultural understanding of home and living space.

MVRDV design adds glass fins with fluid curves to the façade of Tiffany & Co.'s flagship store in Beijing — A new Tiffany & Co. flagship store has opened in the Taikoo-Li Sanlitun commercial neighbourhood in Beijing, with a façade of curving, translucent glass fins that add an ethereal presence to the building. With its flowing shapes inspired by the masterpieces of jewellery designer Elsa Peretti, the Beijing store is the fifth in a series of façade designs created by MVRDV for Tiffany, introducing a new design motif that reflects the pursuit of innovative materials and expressive three-dimensional form that characterises each design in the series.

Set in the south of Beijing, this villa designed by TEMP is both a private dwelling and an art space for gathering — a house that embraces the rhythms of family life while opening itself to art, light, and time. Across four levels, with two above ground and two below, the architecture balances intimacy and community, permanence and change.

Snøhetta, in collaboration with the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD), has won the international competition to design the Beijing Art Museum in Tongzhou District, Beijing. The project officially broke ground on December 31, 2025, with completion and public opening anticipated in 2029. Conceived as a new landmark for the eastern part of the city, the museum will form part of Tongzhou's cultural and civic development strategy as Beijing's sub-center. The commission marks Snøhetta's second major cultural project in the Chinese capital, following the Beijing Library, which opened to the public in 2023 and has since become a key reference for contemporary civic architecture in the city.
