Located in one of the first duplex blocks of Brasília's superquadras, this 294-square-meter (approx. 3,165-square-foot) apartment underwent a renovation that completely transformed its layout and atmosphere. The design sought to celebrate the building's essence by leaving the concrete beams and columns exposed, highlighting the structural materiality. At the same time, it integrated spaces to provide a fluid living experience tailored to contemporary daily life. While the original structure of the staircase was preserved, it received a new metal handrail and guardrail, turning it into a central element that defines the project's identity. The overlapping of the metal meshes that form the staircase guardrail creates a moiré effect, which gives the project its name.

The first home of a couple, Apartment 114S received a renovation project signed by the Brasília office BLOCO Arquitetos, founded by partners Daniel Mangabeira, Henrique Coutinho, and Matheus Seco. The residents’ goal was to transform the apartment into a gathering place for family and friends. With this premise, the three-bedroom property was completely remodeled, creating a large social area with only one suite for the couple. Located in Superquadra 114 in Asa Sul, Brasília, the apartment had its social area expanded, and the kitchen integrated into the living room.

The scope for the modernization of the headquarters building was based on the following design guidelines: Safety: External agents, environmental phenomena, vandalism, attacks, and urban violence; New cementitious board covering for the protection of electrical installations. Health: Indoor air quality; Use of materials that are not harmful to users; Ergonomic environments. Soundproofing: New cementitious board covering; Acoustic treatment ceiling; Double glazing in special environments; Individualized environments. Ergonomics: Furniture with better ergonomic performance. Sustainability: Dry construction; Replacement of facade glass; Structure and materials that facilitate maintenance; Collection and reuse of rainwater; Roof painting with reflective paint; Air conditioning system with better energy efficiency; Lighting with better energy efficiency. The project has as its main elements in its conception the preservation of some constructive and formal elements of the original building, such as the overhead steel structure, water mirrors, exposed concrete, and modulation of the facade frames and also the circulation of the central courtyard. To isolate the building's installations, a new roof was created over the existing beams and a ceiling below them. The specified material for the ceiling meets the specific function of each space.

From the perspective of what has happened in recent years, we believe that care is the key element in healing our weaknesses. Our focus when designing this space was for it to be an accessible environment for all ages. We would like to provoke and instigate self-pride, pride of the marks of our own bodies, of each phase overcome and each battle won. In this search for triggering feelings we found a definition in the URDU language that means pride in being loved, in being cared for.

The change made it contemporary, colorful, and cozy to meet the needs of a young couple in love with Brasília. All changes were designed to modernize and meet the client's needs, highlighting an identity that combines the clients' origins.

At first sight, the light entering the 9.5 meters wide windows in the living room captivates whoever enters the 2,000 ft2 apartment. The kitchen, however, was dark and segregated from the rest of the home. Another key issue was a narrow passageway existing in the hallway, only 78 cm wide. This turned out to be emerging from the structure of the apartment, comprised of three parallel concrete walls: two of them formed the extremities of the apartment, and the other one goes across its center, dividing the kitchen and the living room from the bedroom area, with only the mentioned narrow gap for passage.

The residents of this 141sq m apartment in Brasilia wanted a flexible and integrated space where the kitchen would be the heart of the home. The apartment should include two bedrooms, a TV room, a living room, a kitchen and a laundry area. In addition, the clients wanted to create a strong connection with Brasilia's identity, highlighting the original characteristics of the modernist building, mixed with the art and design pieces collected by the clients around the world. When asked how they imagined the apartment would “taste”, the client replied: “Umami”. Umami is considered the sixth flavor, which enhances and promotes the union between the other flavors. The project was then born from this concept, where living areas are prioritized and the kitchen, like the Umami taste, has the power to unite everyone around them.

“The ceiling used to be decorative, a symbolic plane, a place invested with intense iconography. (…) Now, it has become an entire factory of equipment that enables us to exist, a space so deep that it begins to compete with the architecture. It is a domain over which architects have lost all control, a zone surrendered to other professions." Rem Koolhaas, Venice Biennial. This restaurant is located on the rooftop of one of the newest unit of an international chain hotel located in the centre of Brasília. This is a type of space that is often impersonal, where standardized characteristics are kept throughout its units all over the world. In this project, we were interested in exploring the tension between characteristics that could be understood both as undefined and specific in a hotel building. Therefore, the project aimed to stress the differences between its two main surfaces: the floor and the ceiling. The floor is neutral and impersonal. The ceiling has a specific design with a clear iconographic reference.
