Humanitarian Architecture Competition - Mayukwayukwa Refugee Camp: A Sustainable Development Center in Zambia

Archstorming, in support of the NGO PROVS and UNHCR, is launching an architecture competition in Mayukwayukwa, the oldest refugee camp in Africa. Working in the field of emergency architecture, the competition will be looking for designs for a new Sustainable Development Center to be built in the camp, a space where refugees will be able to carry out projects in areas such as health, education or construction. Special attention will be paid to the use of sustainable materials and easy-to-build construction techniques, with the ultimate goal of enabling refugees to use the method learned when building their own houses. The brief called for the design of a dental clinic and training institute for the NGO His Hands On Africa, a non-profit organization that wants to address the lack of dental services in countries such as Rwanda, the chosen location for this competition.

Tanzania suffers from a terrible shortage of good quality and affordable housing. So dire is this shortage that the nation currently carries a 3 million housing deficit coupled with a 200.000 unit annual demand. Over seventy percent of its urban residents live in unplanned and unserviced informal settlements.

With that in mind, Archstorming is looking for a housing design to be implemented not only in Tanzania, but also in other African countries where housing is an increasing problem.

Archstorming has announced the winning designs for a preschool in Mozambique. Participants were challenged to design a school for disabled children in Xai-Xai. and the winning proposal will be built with the help of the NGO Somos del Mundo and the local initiative Estamos Juntos. Judges selected the five winners and ten honorable mentions.

Archstorming is collaborating in this new competition with His Hands on Africa. a non-profit organization born in 2016 that wants to address the lack of dental services by equipping communities to achieve sustainability with dignity. The chosen location is Rwanda, a small country in the heart of Africa.

In Rwanda, 18% of morbidity cases are directly linked to treatable oral diseases that are easily preventable and curable, with access to basic dental care and education, according to the 2016 reports by the Rwandan District Hospital. In the current competition, we will help Assa, a Mozambican teacher, build a center for children with disabilities and affected by social exclusion, with the help of the Estamos Juntos Initiative and the NGO Somos del Mundo. The winning proposal will be built.

Archstorming have announced the winning projects of "Coexist: Rethinking Zoos," their recent competition to design a concept for the zoo of the 21^st century. The call for entries asked participants to redefine the traditional zoo and transform the space from something that is not only an exhibition of animals, but also an educational tool, and a place for research and conservation. In the competition for architects and architecture students, the challenge was to design a social reintegration solution with essential humanitarian aid for people who return home to Mosul after the Iraq war against ISIS.
