The project is located in Taihang Grand Canyon in Shibanyan Town, Linzhou City. This area is renowned for its majestic peaks and breathtaking scenery, often hailed as the "Soul of the Eight-Hundred-Mile Taihang Mountains," representing the quintessential beauty of northern Chinese landscapes. The village where the project is situated is surrounded by multiple scenic spots, attracting a steady stream of visitors from April to October each year. Two years ago, commissioned by the property owner, we undertook the task of demolishing and rebuilding an old house in the village to create a high-quality, distinctive homestay.

In the south Taihang Mountain near to Shibanyan Town, Linzhou, Anyang , Henan Province, driving along the road beside the stream, the upright cliffs, chopped with knives and axes, rush towards us. In Guo Xi's painting theory "Linquan gaozhi", there is a saying in the landscape training, "Taihang rests on China, and the face is Lin Lu", here it can be said that the appearance is responsible. Shibanyan Town is located in the Taihang Grand Canyon Scenic Area. In recent years, it has been promoted to the most important sketching base in the north with the positioning of "Chinese Painting Valley". It is based on the background of the revitalization of rural cultural tourism that an iconic art gallery is planned to be built in the entrance to the town. In order to avoid the inefficient development brought about by the check and balance of interests, rights and power, a tripartite cooperation model of government artist social capital is practiced here. The art museum supported by the policy provides aesthetic education and cultural benefits for the public, and erects a building for Linzhou. It is a cultural brand; it also provides a living room for cultural exchanges for the artist Meng Xinyu, who has painted the beautiful scenery of Taihang for a long time; it also provides cultural tourism income for local investors to maintain the operation of cultural facilities. The shaping of multiple values brings sustainable longterm development.

Architecture as Space, Architecture as Product - There are two major attitudes towards ‘executing architecture’: designing architecture as space and designing architecture as a product. Many architects and studios in the schools emphasize ‘architecture as space’. Taking the proverb, ‘the use of the bowl is in its void’, for example, they tend to denigrate morphism and functionalist architecture in favor of a ‘sense of place and atmosphere that is often difficult to define. However, these two attitudes are not superior, opposite, or incompatible. Those who speak of architecture as space place their weight on history, memory, tradition, context, place, and so on, and those who design architecture as a product concentrate on function, performance, form, material, technology, tectonics, and details. The architecture of the former is usually studied through perspective drawings, and the hand sketches of the architect, and the latter is usually expressed through bird’s-eye views, isometrics, and exploded drawings. Of course, the former is more interested in sensitivity and the artistic, and the latter is more interested in reason, technology, and the scientific.

Deep in Dongpyeon village, where Gwacheon city meets Anyang, a mountain called Gwanak flows down towards its foot, to become the site surrounded by green and parklands. This plentifulness of nature became the starting point of the project, where important considerations were posed to bring and draw it towards the internal spatiality. In addition to this, the client requested to set the Floor Area Ratio only to 200% instead of 300% of the regulations, with the maximal height up to 10th floor, allowing to implement wide and flexible spaces in the building mass.
