The Switzerland Innovation Park, Allschwil, home to life sciences enterprises, continues to grow. The sustainable Hortus office building creates a modern and flexible working environment for a new generation of technology companies that are settling in the Basel metropolitan region. Our client, Senn, commissioned us to design a radically sustainable office building made of renewable and recyclable building materials. The brief initiated a design process aimed at combining the lowest possible grey energy during construction, an energy-optimized concept during operation, and a surplus of self-generated energy. After 31 years, the building, which has around 600 workplaces, will have fully offset the energy used during its construction. Our collaboration with Senn and a team of experienced specialist planners has resulted in one of the most sustainable office buildings in the German-speaking world.

Bachgraben Public Pool Restaurant / MET Architects

The Gartenbad Bachgraben public swimming pool was designed by Otto and Walter Senn with engineer Heinz Hossdorf and built in 1962. Its concrete buildings are key examples of post-war modernism and are listed in the Basel-Stadt monument preservation inventory. The service building near the main entrance had seen only partial renovation since its construction and required a full refurbishment. The staff areas no longer met operational needs, and the restaurant had been closed since 2011.

The northwest edge of Allschwil, Switzerland, directly adjacent to the border with France, is a global hub for innovative companies in the fields of pharmaceuticals, medicine, and research. The SIP Main Campus project is being developed in this area within the BaseLink site, joining the existing Tech and Life Science Cluster; it is adjacent to sports facilities, a recreational area, and a residential neighborhood. The structural concept reduces interior divisions and vertical supports as much as possible, allowing for a large variety of uses; this flexibility, combined with the durability of building materials, extends the potential life span of the building. Start-ups, scale-ups, and established companies from the biotech and healthcare sectors are addressed as potential users, as are programs that contribute to a better work-life balance and the overall revitalization of the area – for example, the Swiss International School will open a primary school, which will help minimize the need for additional commuting for families.

As a response to the considerable increase of its population, the community of Allschwil -a small town which develops without noticeable interruption at the border of the city of Basel- decided in 2011 to call for a competition for the construction of a school for 600 girls and boys. The place is characterized by its heterogeneity, with low- and medium-scale housing buildings, along with other education buildings and large commercial and infrastructure constructions.
