Espartal consists of a suspended structure made of esparto that filters light and casts a dense shadow, capable of generating thermal comfort and modifying the microclimate of the square. In this way, it transforms a transit space into a place for staying and gathering, offering citizens a renewed experience in the heart of the urban center.

The project arises from its implementation in the surrounding area. The building unfolds through very clear geometry, moving away from the conception of compact architecture. This strategy, along with the slender proportion of the construction, allows for increasing the perimeter of contact between the house and the exterior, creating a system of courtyards that seem limitless.

Stone and oak bring light back into an old farmhouse. With the intense Mediterranean light and surrounded by olive trees, it is not a surprise if a family chose to move to the countryside. This project sought to satisfy their wishes while respecting the essence of Mediterranean architecture. Due to regulatory requirements, it was only possible to renovate the existing house without extending its surface area. Without modifying its perimeter, the thick opaque walls are opened up, giving a new sensation of spaciousness and lightness. The existing roof is extended over the old storage room, preserving the ceramic gable roof. This creates a new luminous space, higher than the old house interior. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are located in a common space. A large window takes advantage of the north orientation that protects it from direct sunlight.

The origin of the design of this singular house located in Cabo de las Huertas in Alicante (southeast Spain) can be summed up in three short stories. The first and most obvious is the one that refers to the client, who dreams of swimming regularly again. That is why the first decision when drawing the floor plan is to fit a 25m long swimming lane on the plot. This fact, together with the unevenness of the terrain, explains the flight of the L-shaped second floor over the pool and first floor, as well as the access sequence to the interior.

Five hundred kilos of Calatorao stones, stainless steel 3mx1.5m plates, solid Spanish walnut wood 50 mm thick. Thickness is the word that would define the proposal and the “raw” presence of the material, responsible for building its friendly atmosphere. Five large blocks of stone, which seem to float, build a fluctuating "magma".
