Chuncheon Art Plaza Bomnae Theater / Simplex Architecture

Bomnae Theater in Memory of Chuncheon Citizens - ‘Bomnae’ is an archaic word for Chuncheon. Bomnae Theater was a performance arena that long played a symbolic role in Chuncheon. This building was built in 1970 as Chuncheon Central Methodist Church (now Chuncheon Methodist Church), the oldest church in Chuncheon. When the church building and its annexes were purchased by Chuncheon City in 2000, it was renamed Chuncheon Art Plaza. Since then, it has been used as a cultural space frequented by citizens for various performances, but the improvement was inevitable due to safety issues and difficulty in facility use, as it was rated as a class D in safety inspection in 2017. For the conservation of the historical value of the building, the local government chose to remodel rather than develop a new structure. The decision was taken to raise the safety rating through structural strengthening and to preserve the symbolic wall decoration. Bomnae Theater was to be renovated by placing an emphasis on the restoration of historical value and sense of place as a modern urban historical and cultural heritage in the memory of Chuncheon citizens.

The building location, Mangwon-dong, is a residential complex that is rapidly changing due to the inflow of a new commercial area. The building which was built in 1974, has been expanded and transformed several times and requires structural reinforcement.

CHAHONG's brand's philosophy is, "At first, it feels like a natural landscape, but it's a design that hugs the heart comfortably as it keeps thinking about it on the way back," and "It's a comfortable blend of beauty while revealing each and everyone." We designed the space based on the philosophy of the brand. We thought about melting the concept of 'home', a brand concept, into space. I focused more on 'white and natural colors', which can be called brand mood. It was intended to create elements throughout the space that did not decorate with other colors but changed physical properties.

The site is located at a corner of an intersection on Sharosu-gil where both narrow alleys and wide roads meet. Because of the law enacted to secure better sight at intersections, the building was built to have a plan type with a cut corner, which serves as the front of the building from the main road and creates a distorted pentagonal plane. We began our design with this cut-corner floor plan.

We have created a response to the context, architecture form and construction, the emotional expression of the facade, and sensation within the space by using simple methods such as building, hanging, blocking, and opening walls.

Therefore issues, such as the maximization of the space area upon the owner’s request and the unavoidable right-to-daylight claims made against the adjacent buildings are common problems often encountered by the architects when assigned to a micro-site in the city center.

This building is located in UN Village which is one of the most exclusive residential area in Seoul. However, it had changed when compared to its original appearance upon completion, much like other houses in this area. Extended illegally, with the intention of compensating for the narrow site in what became a rather haphazard way. Taking this situation into account, we had no choice but to remove all parts except the frame, which was the only part that remained intact. The exterior design embraces the space and provides a view towards the Han River from every corner of the interior.

The married building owner couple who are fashion designers felt attracted to peculiar sensitivity that Yeonnam-dong has. They thought they could enjoy pleasurable lifestyle as there are restaurants where you can taste the dishes from around the world, and as cute small prop shops and workshops of designers are gathered around there. Above all, the fact that there is a park where they can enjoyably take a walk with their dog made them decide to have their new nest in “Yeonnam-dong” where they have never visited before.

This project located next to Hong-ik University, in Seogyo-dong Seoul, has the art department of reputation. So young artists have settled their small studios in old houses along with the university streets, and influenced arts, design, architecture, literature, and more. Then this town became a huge space for cultural exchange of young people and this activity changed old buildings into a brand new or unique remodeled buildings to fit artists’ lifestyle.
