The Finnish coastal archipelago consists of over 80,000 islands. The islands began to emerge from the sea after the ice age, approximately 10,000 years ago. Their cliffs of mostly granite and gneiss have been polished smooth by the kilometers-tall ice sheet that had been pressing them down. The first inhabitants of the archipelago settled about 4000 years ago, and the biggest islands are still inhabited all year round.

From September 6 to October 15, 2025, the Aedes Architecture Forum in Berlin will host an exhibition on the Finnish architectural firm Helin & Co. The show aims to examine the firm's role in shaping Helsinki over the past two decades. Titled Heart and Horizon, it reflects the practice's approach of combining the human scale ("Heart") with an engagement with urban space along the waterfront ("Horizon"). A central focus is placed on three projects that have been fundamental to Helsinki's transformation: the Kamppi Centre, a networked urban quarter with mobility hubs, cultural and residential areas; the Kalasatama Centre, a new district on the former harbour that combines urban density with views of the sea; and the Sello District Centre in Espoo, a multifunctional complex with a library, music school and concert hall.

The light shape of the building hovering above the vineyards blends delicately into the protected landscape, while its breathtaking appearance greatly contributes to the tourism development of the wine region. The specific features of the local volcanic terrain in the region and the continental climate created ideal conditions for viticulture, even before pre-conquest times.

Architecture that connects: new UK Terminal opens in the historic Amsterdam Central Station. The opening of the new Eurostar UK Terminal at Amsterdam Central Station marks an important step in the development of international rail traffic between London and Amsterdam. This new terminal offers a spacious, sustainable, high-quality, and accessible border crossing in the heart of Amsterdam. Architects from ZJA Architects & Engineers and Superimpose Architecture, commissioned by NS Stations, Eurostar, and ProRail, have carefully integrated the new terminal into Amsterdam Central Station, a national monument. This 'terminal of the future' defines a new era for cross-border rail traffic, and brings together various time periods, technologies, aesthetics, and efficiency.

General Information About the Project - South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) sought new premises for its Kotka campus closer to the city center of Kotka. The goal was to provide students with a more accessible location while also creating an architecturally striking building that would serve as a magnet for the entire city. The new building was designed for Kotka's Kantasatama port, where the Maritime Centre Vellamo had long been the sole public building. Simultaneously with Xamk's new facility, the adjacent Event Centre Satama (designed by ALA Architects, 2023) was constructed to host large-scale events and provide them with catering services. Xamk's building was designed to work in synergy with the Event Centre Satama, allowing both buildings to benefit from each other's functions and share several spaces.

The development of the Loiske Spa & Wellness Center was guided by key concepts centered on sustainability, experiential design, and architectural harmony with its surroundings. The project was part of a broader master plan to enhance tourism in Ähtäri, Finland, with a focus on sustainable development. The architects sought to maintain material and design consistency with the adjacent Hotel Mesikämmen, a 1976 structure by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, known for its nature-oriented expressionist modernism. This approach emphasized the use of tactile materials such as wood, concrete, and textured tiles to create an atmospheric and distinctive wellness experience.

The new daycare center in Kaijonharju in Oulu, Finland, is a wooden, low-carbon, and chemically low-impact facility designed for the future. MUUAN was responsible for the project's principal design, architectural design, and interior design. The structural design was done in collaboration with Laukka, and the landscape design was done by HELMA. Oulun Tilapalvelut oversaw the design process and set the goals for low carbon emissions and the absence of harmful substances.

The project seeks to explore how architectural design can support commonality and inclusion while reinterpreting the semi-dense perimeter block typology in a former warehouse area, Postipuisto, in Helsinki, Finland. Social inclusion forms the core of the design. The housing block accommodates affordable housing, co-housing, rental apartments, and owner-occupied units. The different housing tenure types share a common courtyard for all residents. The design of plan types is adjusted for each unit. For instance, the affordable apartments at the eastern tip of the block were designed for a local organization providing housing for low-income residents. Here, apartments for different households are mixed, including larger family apartments, studios, as well as special units with high-level accessibility for the elderly.

Noli Otaniemi is located in the rapidly growing and developing area of Otaniemi in Espoo. The 15-storey hotel contains 406 studios and is the largest Noli Studios hotel yet built. In accordance with the Noli concept, the hotel is aimed for both short- and long-term accommodation and is designed to enable a sense of community, thus catering to the needs of professionals, researchers, and international talents in the Otaniemi scientific community and the nearby business districts. Located directly next to a stop of the Raide-Jokeri tram line and only half a kilometer away from Aalto University metro station, the hotel is extremely well-connected.

The site is on the edge of a forest next to a large field.

Pistohiekka sauna-restaurant is the first step towards rebuilding the Pistohiekka resort area which flourished until the 1980s but has since disappeared. The project brings long-awaited services back to the area in the form of a lakeside sauna and a restaurant. Pistohiekka sauna-restaurant is one of the key development sites in Studio Puisto’s design for developing tourism and wood construction in Pistohiekka. The concept boasts a strong design aesthetic based on a central, curved outdoor space with the restaurant and sauna spaces spiraling around it.

The City of Helsinki is redeveloping its former harbor areas for residential use. One of these areas, the vacated 100-hectare cargo port and dockyard in Jätkäsaari, right next to the city center, will, when completed, contain housing for 21,000 people and workplaces for another 6,000. As building all the required residential parking capacity underground, below sea level would be restrictively expensive, combined with the aim to reduce street-side parking, the city has commissioned a series of architecturally ambitious over-ground parking facilities to cover the residential parking needs in the neighborhood.
