The house is a characteristic expression of the firm's design philosophy, marked by simplicity and modesty in the use of materials, textures, finishes, and furnishings. Positioned as a largely linear volume on an elevated site, the form refrains from overpowering its context. Instead of exploiting the site's height advantage over the surrounding terrain, the architecture integrates a laterite wall that functions both as a compound wall and the main building skin along the eastern elevation. This wall stretches across the larger volume that houses the common areas.

Set in a landscape that reminisces about residential properties of yesteryear Kerala, dating back to the 80s when houses were placed in the middle of a relatively larger plot, which not only accommodates a private garden, a kitchen garden, and holds flora and fauna that were more than ornamental purposes.

This residence is set in a site that is covered in coconut plantations and other native vegetation belonging to a typical northern Kerala landscape: A very quiet and tranquil setting that doesn't invite any kind of intrusions. Altering this and bringing about any kind of change called for a respectful approach.

The courtyard house - Set in a packed residential area in Aluva, a town in Kerala with a typical dense fabric, this house feels like an escapade to serenity from all the urban commotion. The clients, an NRI couple, wanted a house for their family of six, with their two kids and the husband’s parents. They had a complete understanding of what the site offered: a corner plot surrounded by trees and roads on either sides, sharing borders with two other houses. They dreamed of having spaces curated entirely for them and their briefing about their to-be-home, rooted out of an extensive research, made it easier as well as challenging at the same time.

When approached with two choices one: to design a new home in a vacant plot and to realize the aspirations of the client through a brand new, fresh, home; two: to renovate an existing house and make it meet the requirements put forward by the client and of course making him happy about it; to choose the latter one would be tagged mundane by many.
