With Haus S, a couple from Berlin wanted to realize their vision of a house that grows. Planned in the first step as a holiday home on a small budget, at a later stage it was to be expanded into a retirement residence. Under a roof that was conceived as a kind of extended raised hide with a fantastic view of the mountains, further floors were to be added gradually.

In a prime location in Tübingen close to the river Neckar the housing project of the private joint building venture Wolle+ is testing new strategies and housing concepts for the integration of people from diverse social environments and cultural backgrounds with very different standards of living and income levels. The socially responsible housing project Wolle+ in which the housing sociologist Dr. Gerd Kuhn played a pivotal role reacts directly to the housing requirements and social and communicative needs of refugees, but also wants to pursue the adaptive concept of Housing for All.

“Haus D” occupies a small site at the center of a scenic suburb of the city of Tuttlingen. Wedged tightly in between traditional buildings constructed over the last few centuries, at first glance, the property did not seem suitable for new construction at all. Nevertheless, Haus D stands here, its structure adjusted to the position of the sun, its shape determined by adjacent structures and the distances in between them. From east to west, the ground level of Haus D differs by three meters. This topographical condition drove the project’s conceptual design. On its east side, Haus D features two interior stories, a front yard and an exterior drive. On the west side, it accommodates one interior story and a back yard with an exterior garden.

Haus B is a work by Yonder for a well-known, Stuttgart-based family of architects. Before the turn of the century, the family moved into a frequently refurbished 1950s building located on a site with magnificent views of Stuttgart’s basin-shaped valley. Yonder’s task was to renovate and rebuild this existing building. In an effort to work sustainably, the new construction makes use of the existing house as much as possible. At the same time, the reconstruction more clearly organizes space, better frames the site’s breathtaking views and ensures that the four-level building is easily accessible despite being constructed on a site with an extreme slope.
