Located in Vila Madalena, the 110m² apartment received a partial intervention focused on the social area. Developed for a couple, she is French and he is Brazilian, with two small children, the property gained a farmhouse proposal, with historical memories of architecture and decoration, in addition to conveying a cozy, tranquil sensation that this rustic style transmits.

The house was to be adapted for small and medium-sized events with the delicacy and personality of our projects. The proposal was to enhance the existing, bringing delicacy and romance to the ensemble. The new and the old should integrate with a tension that translates into contemporaneity. The enhancement of the existing happened in the main house, in the outhouse, which was destroyed, and in a large abandoned backyard with centuries-old trees. Delicate colors like closed beige and antique pink were chosen to be composed with natural materials such as wood, brick, and hydraulic tiles made in the same color palette.

It is in a gated community, and though surrounded by neighbors, it enjoys some isolation from them, so the project can better explore the interaction between the interior and exterior spaces.
The Ibiuna country house, located 100km from the city of Sao Paulo, sits on a 17.000 m2 plot facing a large reservoir. The interiors had incredibly low ceilings due to the use of linings and the old structure was generally fragmented with little connection to the outdoors. Our design broadened the space and our main guideline was to take down the barriers between the inside and the outside. The choice of materials was significant for the desired concept. Because it is a country house, we opted for natural and rustic materials, such as stone, brick, and wood. We wanted a house that would connect to nature in a light and spontaneous fashion, without competing with the grand view to the reservoir and its green surroundings. The social area was expanded by relocating the kitchen and service areas, which allowed for a connection between an inside patio – which used to be isolated – and a veranda to the reservoir. The brick floor unites the inside and the outside, which are then limited by large sliding metal window frames from floor to ceiling. Everything designed to deconstruct the limits between interior and exterior and give the feeling of being one with the reservoir.

In a city as big as Sao Paulo, a place where houses increasingly give way to buildings, a couple had the good fortune of finding a ground floor apartment with a gigantic garden. However, the space was narrow, very dark and divided into several smaller rooms. They wanted it to reflect their personalities, prioritizing the connection between the living spaces and the garden, which is basically twice the size of the indoor space.

Located near Sao Paulo, this 560 square meters country house fits perfectly into the 9 meters slope that culminates to a preserved Mata Atlantica patch of forest. The house is comprised of three volumes that are united by a wide concrete wall that marks the entrance and leads the sight to the grove crossing the house’s simple volumes. The solid brick walls are the same color as the local soil, which gives the impression that the house sprouted from the ground. The access to the house leads us 16 steps into the ground, reinforcing this sensation.

AKQA, an international advertising agency that planned to come to Brazil, commissioned Estúdio Penha to design a home-based office with the warmth and soul characteristic of our projects. There were many challenges, a house that should adapt to a great program of needs for its complete functioning: spaces for the clients conviviality, production, creators and all the support structure. However, its adaptation to the new reality required a horizontal and vertical enlargement.
