Trees flank the wide streets, dividing the plots with dense canopies offering shaded avenues. Abutting the plot stood a cluster of trees- a quiet presence. We borrowed these trees into the design, their presence extending into the home's narrative.

Premise: Reading the City - Manipal is a modern town along the coasts of Southern India. Its development began in early 1953, with a population of 2000-5000 people with Dr T.M.A Pai who laid the foundation of the educational hub. Manipal today is home to an estimated 25,000-30,000 students, constituting roughly 50-60% of the city's population. With the infrastructural blocks mushrooming, the urban fabric becomes rigid and devoid of social spaces for the young floating population. By re-imagining academic spaces, the TAPMI Centre for Sustainability seeks to address this imbalance.

Traditionally, food was not just for sustenance but was a means of hospitality and historical influences. Decoding the craft that went behind, the ability to blend the flavors harmoniously and celebrate the diversity, we crafted narrative-weaving stories that aimed to be a testament to this enchanting power. The elements that became part of the narrative reflected the intricate artistry and cultural richness.

The New Architecture & Design campus for MAHE was built on a dense contoured land of 3.9 acres with a vision to create interwoven and fluid spaces. The campus is planned for 1200 students from the field of Architecture, Design, and Fashion. Located in the coastal town of Manipal in Karnataka, mother ship of Manipal Academy of Higher Education Institutes. The city is bustling with vibrant campus life and students coming from different parts of the world. A subset of the existing facility which already held strong roots in the existing system with an avant-garde vision offered a mold to a design philosophy that is innovative yet sensitive. The design originated from the strong topographical site- context. The site had a major slope of 18m towards the South-East side at a mere distance of 100m, facing the valley. Working with a 10mx10m grid, the building blocks were stepped down to have undisturbed views of the valley while also respecting the existing contours.

The Brick House is located in the coastal town of Mangalore, in the south Karnataka region. A melting pot of many cultures coming together, the city is well-known for its inimitable landscape and dotted heritage lingering in the old parts of the town. The site is in a dense urban sprawl in that area. Having moved to Saudi, the client’s aspiration was to have a family home close to his ancestral roots. The design brief for the house had stories from his formative years walking past the old brick factories with chimneys poking above the coconut trees. And those of red-oxide flooring and lime plaster-finished walls which keep the house refreshingly cool. To put it together, this family house should evoke memories of the past while keeping the design unique and aesthetically modern. Mangalore features a tropical climate with heavy to moderate rainfall most of the year and hot summer days. Passive design strategies and planning principles were involved to ensure uninterrupted cross-ventilation.

Located on an ancestral property of 12,800 sqft in central Bangalore (India), Norris Road Residential is built for the new generation where 6 families could reside, enjoying the best of collective living while having their own private spaces. The antiquity of the existing structure had to find a new life with the new built form. This became the motivating factor for building the material palette and connecting with the existing landscape. The building is oriented in a north-south direction with 2 units planned per level. To cut down on the sun, the southern side was planned with recessed decks and vertical fins for the private areas. Openness and privacy are controlled through careful consideration of glazing positions. Jaali/Mashrabiyas were used as a symbolic gesture reflecting the memories of the past, which existed back then. These screens also act as visual barriers and bring in patterns highlighted by the sunlight.

The project was initiated with the idea of condensing the gap between the built and greens. With a little research of the neighborhood, we identified the diminishing greens and dying lakes in the vicinity. Vanam is a reaction to this increasing breach in the urban fabric. It is designed as a stimulus to restore the balance in the built and green spaces blurring the boundaries between the two.

Occupying a strategic position in the heart of Bangalore city, India, the project is in close proximity with some of the best hospitality, medical and commercial facilities in the city. The clients brief saw a potential for limited ‘Sky Villas’ where the architecture would re-interpret new levels of luxury in living.
