The project is part of the Grand Parilly development project in south-east Lyon: a 20-hectare site at the entrance to the city at the crossroads of major roads, identified as a strategic development sector by the Metropole de Lyon. The urban project organizes comb-shaped blocks around a new landscaped axis, "the green furrow", with thick templates and relatively high density. Tectonique's proposal assumes this density while striving to reduce the impact of the scale of the plots and take advantage of their thickness. While the layout and massing of the buildings comply with town-planning regulations, they have also been guided by a bioclimatic strategy and a concern for integration with the Faubourien urban fabric that remains to the south. The volumetric fragmentation generates a varied floor plan, refining the buildings and creating 92% of through or dual-oriented apartments served by naturally lit corridors.

The project is part of the Orfèvres eco-district, developed by SERL as part of a development concession for the town of Trévoux on the banks of the Saône. This new 10-hectare district lies to the east of the historic town center, in a quiet, predominantly residential environment. It is designed to promote connections with the existing urban fabric and landscape, soft modes of transport and to limit the presence of cars. The neighborhood is built around a public park that extends to the south along the former railroad line that linked the city to Lyon Croix Rousse. Lot B4, on which Tectoniques is working, directly overlooks this park.

Built in 1974 by Jouven and Phelouzat (who also designed the neighboring hospital), the existing college is located on the south-western outskirts of the city center, in a suburban fabric that combines facilities, business parks, multi-family housing, and single-family dwellings. It is made up of several buildings arranged in an orthogonal system with no relationship to their surroundings. This functionalist architecture, poorly maintained, is now in a state of disrepair. The fragmentation of the buildings and successive additions have rendered the whole complex illegible and dysfunctional. The existing college is symptomatic of an ordinary heritage dating back to the 1970s, which has largely fallen into disrepute. Its transformation is now a necessity to meet contemporary environmental challenges. This implies taking a fresh look at it, as a heritage to be taken care of, an available resource rather than a clean slate. In addition to bringing the building up to standard and renovating its heating system, the project aims to clarify the formal and programmatic layout of the entire site in order to relieve congestion at the 550-student school, while increasing its capacity to 600. The project strategy must also take into account the need for a construction site on an occupied site, and therefore for phasing.

Proudhon secondary school was built in 1971. It is located in the Palente district, to the north of Besançon. It is surrounded by the Pergaud sixth form secondary school and the Orchamps gymnasium. The original architecture is typical of the mass urbanisation of the 1960s and the policy of standardisation, two phenomena which forged the “ordinary” heritage of the 20th century. The Tectoniques architectural firm in collaboration with Architectures Adelfo Scaranello won the competition to restructure and extend the facility. The school had to remain open throughout the duration of the building works.

Block 32 occupies a strategic position in the vast programme to renovate the Duchère neighbourhood, in Lyon. The OPAC du Rhône housing association has produced a building which incorporates 33 social rental housing units, 1,500m2 of office space dedicated to health-related activities, and has retail space throughout the ground floor. Its central location, at the crossroads between the new Abbé Pierre square and the east / west boulevard, means it is highly visible and its proximity to the athletics hall imposes the need for a resoundingly urban attitude.

After a call for ideas addressed to the local residents, the Maison de l’Environnement et du Développement Durable (Centre for the Environment & Sustainable Development) of the Hénin-Carvin Joint Urban Authority adopted the name Aquaterra. The facility is in the middle of a large park on the site of the former Drocourt coking plant. Founded in 1925, this was one of Europe’s largest coke production plants. After changes in the coal and steel industries in the late 20th century, the plant finally closed in 2002. All of the developments were quickly demolished, leaving just a large platform and some terrils (slag heaps). The marked, polluted ground and the slag heaps, mountains and hills, composed of inert but emblematic masses in this flat landscape, are the only relief visible from a long distance.

The plan is efficient, almost square, measuring 10 x 11m. Along the west of the ground floor is a garage finished in black pannels timber composite, extended by a canopy. Free and open, it is organised around a central core that contains the services: cellar, networks, shower/bath room, and kitchen. All the rooms form a ring around this hub. Uninterrupted through views and continual contact with nature are maintained by using sliding partitions and large glazed areas facing each other. A strip of ancillary and storage areas runs along the full height of the west wall. The overall scheme creates a multipurpose space, open onto the south and north gardens and the patios. Consistency is created between the building and the external spaces, which enhance each other. Thus the living area becomes larger than the space delimited by the walls.

For Tectoniques, this project represents a relatively recent process of reflection and production – that of collective housing in an urban landscape. The team is familiar with the theme of habitats: accommodation for elderly and/or dependent people, tourist residences or private houses. But this is their first design for urban social housing. Les Symphonies is a building that contains 62 social housing units – 23 of them rented, 39 privately owned. It is located in Saint-Priest, whose architectural tissue is typical of the 1970s, with blocks that are linear, horizontal or vertical, and large areas allocated to car parking. The Mozart ZAC occupies a strategic position for the development of the community, opposite the town hall, in Le Portique de Saint-Priest. Covering 4.5 hectares, it adds substance and structure to the town centre, located on the tram line, enhancing the configuration of the public space.
