La Miradora House / Taller General

The Miradora is a dwelling located in the central highlands of Ecuador, in the páramo ecosystem at 3403 meters above sea level. The elongated plot has access on one end from a local road and, on the other, a large ravine. On either side, neighboring prairies and large volcanoes define the location of the house. It sits at the highest point of the lot and takes advantage of a slight slope to open up to all views and organize its interior.

How to live on a mountain? This single-family house is located on the outskirts of the city, on a ridge that separates Quito from the adjacent valleys, the current expansion zones of the city. The land is located on a north-south ridge that allows a privileged view to the opposite sides. To the east, the valleys of Quito and the eastern mountain range; to the west, the consolidated plateau of the city. The enjoyment of this view is interrupted by the strong winds that blow from the eastern slope, making it difficult to stand at times.

The site. On the outskirts of the city, in a mountainous topography, far, yet close. We are located on the hill Auqui, one of the slopes that border the city of Quito. This location is separated from the city by a river. However, it is a 20-minute drive to downtown.

The container. In the historic center of Quito, the number of unused spaces within heritage residential buildings is very high. This is a 28m2 space and we must adapt it in a way, so it works as the minimum living space for one or two people.

Context. The project’s objective was to generate a holiday house that establishes an intimate relationship with nature while maintaining a good connection with the outside. A house that combines these two complexities and proposes an alternative to everyday life. The house is located in Mindo, a town in the humid forest of the Ecuadorian Andes in an area known as “Chocó Andino”, this area is characterized by heavy rainfall, warm weather and high humidity.

New vs. Old
Every so often we meet a client who is faced with the decision to buy a new property that might be out of his budget or buy something already built and recondition it. Our advice always stands out the second option. We believe that is better to take advantage of an existing building and with doing so strengthen the city as it, the challenge is visualize the possibilities.
