In-Between House / Super Assembly

The name In-Between House draws from its very form—a composition of four cuboid volumes arranged with deliberate gaps in between. These interstitial spaces are where landscape is invited in: pockets of greenery, planters, and water features that soften the geometry and activate the voids. It is in these "in-between" spaces that daylight pours in, casting shifting patterns across interior surfaces and creating conditions for planting to thrive. These voids not only connect the masses visually and experientially, but also serve as spatial buffers, providing a sense of privacy from adjacent neighbors while still drawing in light and ventilation deep into the home.

The design vision behind Cavern House was inspired by the captivating formations and expansive spaces found within caves. The aim was to create a residence that offers immersive spatial experiences while fostering familial bonds. To surprise visitors upon entry, the main entrance was concealed behind a windowless facade, and a transition from a modest foyer to a series of interconnected spaces extending toward the rear of the house was created.

By adopting a context-sensitive approach, the architectural design of a shell encompassing a living space has the capacity to regulate the interactions between its occupants and the external surroundings. This intentional openness and closure of the structure enable the desired living experience to be facilitated, as it harmoniously engages with the environment.

Window House / Super Assembly + Formwerkz Architects

The brief was to design spaces for intimate family moments, as well as host extended family gatherings on festive occasions. The spaces would maintain privacy, yet also be open to views, greenery, natural light, and ventilation. The house is located in central Singapore on an elevated site flanked on three sides by neighboring properties. The architects conceived the house design as a continuous landscape, where spaces interconnected, each with defining qualities. The architect's employed strategies including splitting the house into multiple levels, and the use of windows and color. These form the central design idea and characterize the house’s unique spatial experience.
