Designed for a Swiss couple seeking a deeper connection to the environment, the house invites a lifestyle centered on living outdoors in comfort without air conditioning. Set on a secluded mountain with expansive ocean views and surrounded by abundant biodiversity, the home is completely open toward the Pacific so its inhabitants remain in constant dialogue with light, air, and the forest canopy.

Overview - Two wooden pavilions gently rise above the jungle canopy, framing panoramic views of the ocean and integrating with the lush topography that stretches out below them. At its heart, a central lobby anchors the residence, connecting the master suite and guest rooms to create a fluid spatial composition that is both serene and elemental. Every element, from the architectural composition to the interior details, was conceived in close continuity to ensure a unified and coherent spatial experience.

In the depths of the Osa Peninsula, a giant tree fell to the ground. For the first time, sunlight penetrated the dense canopy, revealing a rare glimpse of the blue sky above. The natural clearing it created offered a place for two researchers to build their off-grid home, surrounded in every direction by the vibrations of the wild. Concept - The rainforest is a complex multi-layered environment, where the density and darkness can be disorienting. An opening in the foliage provides a moment of clarity, revealing the towering heights of trees. This panoramic experience inspired the design of the home, which takes the shape of a disk with an oculus at its center. On its periphery, the house interfaces with the forest, while its core provides a sanctuary from the wilderness. From this elevated platform, residents are immersed in the sounds and rhythms of nature, transitioning throughout the day like a symphony.

The project enhances the hotel’s distinctive character, which embodies both artistic vision and architectural creativity. More than just a boutique hotel, Aguas Claras serves as a living gallery, showcasing the lifework of renowned Costa Rican artist Elizabeth Steinvorth. The result is a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary design, creating a unique sanctuary where art, nature, and architecture come together.

Across from the town of Dominical, nestled into the lush mountainside, 'Cascada de Luz' gazes out over the surf lineup towards the distant horizon where whales annually rear their young. Sunrays filter through the roof canopy, casting a soft, dappled light over the spaces below. A refreshing breeze flows up through the home, carrying the scent of native flowers. As day turns to night, the ocean mirrors the stars above, and the waves rolling over the sand offer a soothing rhythm in which to fall asleep. The home is designed to progressively highlight the wondrous ecological and topographical surroundings. As visitors arrive and descend the driveway, they are offered glimpses of the ocean through the trees, over the top of the house. The roof covering is composed of perforated panels, tinted blue to create a seamless visual transition with the ocean’s horizon. Dropping below a soaring overhang, visitors find themselves in a cool and protected arrival area. Here, soft light permeates through the perforated panels, translucent sheets, and an array of teak louvers, creating an ambiance reminiscent of a dense jungle.
