“Books In the Running Brooks...”. Because most learning, research, and information storage now takes place online, stacks stocked with books are no longer the definition of a library. At Stevenson School, O+A’s design removed shelves of unused books to make way for the hands-on, collaborative forms of learning and study that now shape a student’s life. Essential books remained as a reminder of where the larger culture comes from and to give students access to texts needed for their classes, but the aim of the design was to open up space and delineate its functions.

It’s not often a design firm gets to go back and check in on past projects. Usually, we visit a few weeks after move-in, but it’s rare that we get to see a space a few years later. Meraki’s expansion to a new floor offered an opportunity to observe how the company had grown into (or in this case out of) the space O+A designed for it four years ago. Rapid growth is a good thing, but it comes with its own challenges: too many workstations, not enough storage. For Meraki’s new space, we put strategies in place that will make the future more manageable.

A bank is not a client to whom designers would normally suggest their most adventurous color choices, but the creative team at Capital One Labs in San Francisco was an exception. This group, which develops apps for easy and effective interface with Capital One’s online customers, wanted their space to reflect the wide open spirit of their team. Capital One Labs is essentially a design studio, and the people who work there wanted it to look like one. They didn’t want to drape it in banker’s gray.

As tech companies take root in urban locations where space is limited, the collegial spirit of Silicon Valley finds new modes of expression in high-rise buildings and converted industrial facilities. Key to our design for Yelp was the concept of a vertical campus– an all-encompassing, self-contained community stacked on multiple floors. Yelp moved its HQ from a smaller site in San Francisco to a classic Financial District high-rise. As with most multi-story occupancies, the design challenge at Yelp was to facilitate group dynamics so that people interact with each other even though they work on different floors.

Viewed from almost any angle, the interiors create an impression of light, spaciousness, bright color, long sightlines. Meraki, which was recently acquired by Cisco Systems, takes pride in the elegance of the wireless routers itdesigns. O+A sought to build the space the way Meraki builds its products, with an emphasis on simplicity and seamless ease of use, while remaining mindful of the importance of the Cisco-‐Meraki merger to the company’s identity. Located in the rapidly changing Mission Bay neighborhood, Cisco-‐Meraki’s 110,000-‐square-‐footsuite of offices now becomes Cisco’s principal San Francisco location.
