NN Kralingen Housing / de Kovel architecten + Studio AAAN

The project forms the border of the Kralingen East district in Rotterdam. As a result of careful urban integration, a connection is made with the structure of the existing neighborhood, whilst creating space to continue the nearby green structure of the ring canal along the water. The ribbon development on the east side also acts as a buffer against the noise of the nearby highway for the neighborhood behind.

Wantijhof Dordrecht Building Complex / Studio AAAN

Connection to the city. The waterfront of the Wantij in Dordrecht has been an industrial site for centuries. The shipyards and warehouses have now disappeared, but the water tower, mill, and power plant have been given new functions within the urban development, adjacent to the historic city center of Dordrecht.

Terphouse Rotterdam / Studio AAAN

In the open polder landscape of dikes and small islands near Rotterdam, the Terphouse is situated as a sturdy structure on a mound in the landscape. The means used to make the house sustainable and ready for more extreme climate conditions became the main elements of the design, most apparent in the characteristic canopy and underground level with the protruding patios.

Urban Canyon Apartments / Common Practice + Studio AAAN

In the new urban district on Amsterdam’s Oostenburgereiland, a compact residential ensemble was realized on an exceptionally narrow plot along the blind side wall of a high parking building. Common Practice and Studio AAAN made the masterplan with 64 dwellings around a striking courtyard and designed two apartment buildings with special mid-rent housing, in which as many collective and private spaces as possible have a relationship with the serene courtyard.

Hospice de Liefde, Center for Terminal Care / de Kovel architecten + studio AAAN

’De Kapel’ is a monumental farmhouse located on the southern edge of Zuidwijk, a residential district in Rotterdam. This national monument has been transformed into a centre for terminal care: Hospice ‘de Liefde’. The thatched building has been extensively renovated and expanded. With the addition of a new wing, the experience of the routing through the monument and the garden, nature, light and spaciousness is used to contribute to a dignified farewell.

House Zevenhuizen / Studio AAAN

On the outskirts of Zevenhuizen, this house stands as a pure black sculpture in a patchwork of greenhouses, farmlands, and dwellings. At first glance, the slated house looks like a classical barn in the backyard, but upon approach, it unveils a contemporary and sophisticated detailing. The house has been built on a plot in the Zuidplaspolder. The goal of the assignment was to create a modern dwelling that fits in a rural environment. The building is composed of a sober archetypal main form, in which additions and interruptions to the volume are avoided.
