Cenchi Coffee Jiaodaokou shop is quite diminutive, its size a mere 8 square meters. This project began at the end of the pandemic, which also led directly to the choice of this small empty site. Our thought stream went along these lines: The epidemic has brought cataclysmic changes to the lives of a great many people, and if even face-to-face breathing hides potential danger, then what does it really mean to "have a cup of coffee together"?

Our project emerged from an experiment on materials. We hoped to find a material that could uniformly fit all the parts of our space. After playing with various materials, we settled on birch plywood. Secondly, we obtained a basic measurement for all components within the column grid of the site, thus determining the spacing of the parts according to this given criterion. We then determined the thickness of the plates used according to different stress relations and finally went into further deep analysis of details to establish a compelling connection between materials. Thus, the various components of the space took shape: tables, chairs, shelves, walls, doors, partitions, or other decorative elements. This design step integrates all parts into a complete system and can perfectly match the measure of the site. With this system of parts, we can cope with complex functional divisions and usage change requirements.

MONOLOGO (Monong Coffee) is located in the industrial landscape protection area of Beijing’s 751 Park. This site includes a furnace tank area on the south side of the original 751 plant which has been wholly preserved, while a vast open space spreads between the west side and the main road cutting through the park. The core part of the site is a factory building with a concrete frame structure dating back to the 1970s. Three imposing furnace tanks are preserved in the center of the site. Two yellow and black steel structures were added to the south, east and west corners of the plant on two separate occasions. Our renovation project should be counted as the fourth "extension" of the site. We hope that memories of former interventions may be fully preserved, and through this project, they will eventually be connected into a cohesive narrative.

Cotton Park is a large collection store based in the community, including three functional modules: coffee, clothing retail, and parent-child activity area. We abandoned the design method based on functional zoning, and took a completely homogeneous and abstract space model as the basis of design, allowing an adaptive structural unit to grow on its own. In this way, the experience part of space is formed first: scale, weight, boundary, sense of enclosure, and mobility. The second step is to superimpose the functional area on the system and fine-tune the system to form the final design result.

Coffee, barista, and space will form an overall experience process, which is different in each cafe. In Cenchi Coffee the process will be "inviting guests to step into the bar area". We treat this small space facing the street like a big bar: the whole cafe is a bar area. The three modules of the ordering table, pour-over coffee bar, and espresso bar are fully open and arranged on the central axis. All guest seats are located inside the bar area, and customers can only sit in the area of the bar. The three bars can be surrounded, like the kitchen island at home, which breaks the distinction between the "front" and "back" of the bar.

Next to the parking lot outside the ocean park in the TianfuNew District of Chengdu, there is a coffee shop called Crimson. The first floor has an area of 300 square meters, withthe east and west sides facing outside. The site has undergone a round of decoration before, the ground has been paved and the irregular mezzanine has been built. We hope to transform this space into a vibrant place by adding only few elements.

Radio is a tiny neighborhood coffeehouse. The process of making coffee is fascinating: Along with the operation of barista behind the bar, the bean grinder sounds, the aroma of coffee begins to diffuse, until the coffee beans are made into a cup of coffee with a unique flavor and placed in a delicate container presented in front of guests. In this process, the barista is more like a performer playing complicated instruments. We hope this superb performance could be fully demonstrated through our spacial design.
