A Growing City and a New School – Hyderabad's rapid westward expansion, driven by massive office and residential developments, has created a fast-shifting city center. This rapid growth has outpaced the supporting infrastructure, leading to a high demand for new facilities, particularly schools. Our clients, experienced builders, plan to construct a large, permanent school to meet this need. In the interim, they required a transitional campus to enroll their first students. This inaugural group will eventually move to the new, permanent campus once it's complete. After the transition, this campus will be transformed into a flagship office, showcasing the builder company's various construction projects in the area.

India and education – In India, one of the earliest forms of schools is a gurukul (guru-teacher, kul-house). To people familiar with this concept, this invokes a powerful image of a learned guru passing on knowledge to disciples under the shade of a large tree. This unbounded, minimal, indirect instruction as a form of transfer of knowledge soon disappeared around the 19th century, with the cells and bells model taking over the majority of institutions.

Home: When does a house become a home? What can a house do more than just provide shelter? Does the feeling of a space rely on tangible elements (furniture, decor, etc)? Or the feeling of a space is defined by the intangible (light, volume, wind, etc)? These fundamental inquiries into the nature of a home; the smallest built component of any society; formed the genesis of this particular project.

Context: Jubilee Hills is a hilly, up-market residential neighborhood in Hyderabad, India. It is filled with large, opulent residences, most of which are more vanity projects of its influential inhabitants than climate or context-sensitive structures. As such, every building, in an attempt to appear distinct and more striking in its immediate surroundings, made this neighborhood an amalgamation of a misfit mix of architectural styles from every when and where. Character, if any, comes from the undulating hilly roads, the rocky terrain, and the consistent presence of large trees, especially the Yellow flame trees (Peltophorum pterocarpum), compared to the other neighborhoods of Hyderabad.

In Hyderabad’s dry, hot climate, the vast majority of office-goers are resigned to spend their entire day within the confines of air-conditioned space with very little access to fresh air from the outdoors. Hyderabad--a once laid-back town-- is now a competitive cosmopolitan city, attracting many big-tech companies, who build millions of square feet of office space per year.

The smallest plot size available in most of the residential layouts of the city is about 200sqyards or 170 sqmts. A Large requirement on such a small plot called for an introverted solution with a garden at the center, around which the rest of the spaces function. This garden was lifted up to accommodate parking, a room for the domestic help and a games room on the stilt floor. An extra room was added on the terrace for guests.

Hyderabad is one of the fastest growing cities in India. The old city is space stagnant and the development is rapidly moving towards and happening around the new city, which has the space to absorb it. The soaring land prices around here are a direct result of this. The families are tightly knit in India, often staying for generations together. The clients are one such family of three generations (and a probable fourth in the near future) moving to this new part of the city. The land parcels available here would mean they would have to depart from the spacious, horizontal lifestyle they were so used to before, and move into a more vertical settlement.

It was to be a place which would draw people inside upon the first glance. The client wished to have a nautical theme inside out, from food to architecture. The idea of container architecture although suitable, posed an intriguing challenge is it possible to evolve an expression that presents the illusion of container architecture; equally exciting; without any of its flaws.
