Located in Calicut, Kerala, and set within a preserved 8.5 cent plot, 'SOHO Work + Living' manifests as one half of twin blocks, both designed as an office cum residence typology for two friends, one being the architect himself. The design evolved as a unified architectural statement where two structures, functionally independent and featuring similar programs, are harmonized through complementary massing and a shared visual identity. This approach strikes a fine balance between privacy and interconnectedness, offering a cohesive experience for occupants and observers alike.

Located in the picturesque mountain town of Sulthan Bathery in Kerala, the site sits within a sloping terrain typical of the region's mountainous landscape, descending towards the east. The topography presented both a design challenge and an opportunity to craft a home that integrates naturally with the contours of the land. While the site lacked naturally level platforms, strategic site grading was employed to create two distinct ground levels for construction. The careful placement of two building blocks minimized cut-and-fill operations and reduced the need for extensive retaining structures, allowing the built form to nestle into the landscape with minimal disturbance.

The residence is located in the quaint village of Mathamangalam in Kannur, Kerala. The elevated topography of the site coupled with the gradual ascent and expansive foreground on offer gives a sense of anticipation as one approaches the residence. This rising journey connects the occupants to the natural surroundings, allowing the house to be experienced progressively.

Set amidst a fairly occupied locality, a few kilometers away from the National Highway that connects Kochi and Kozhikode, two coastal cities in the southern state of Kerala, the east-facing site was already sided by houses on its north-south boundaries, which became a deciding factor in the massing design of the residence. The residence was envisioned as three blocks with the majority of openings directed towards the central courtyard, shielded from the front road by a screen wall allowing the breezes to rustle in while establishing the required privacy.
