The readapted industrial building houses a purpose-designed studio for Australian multi-disciplinary design practice, Smart Design Studio. A mezzanine with four meeting rooms overlooks the light-filled space through the existing slender steel trusses. A dramatic caretaker’s apartment on the top floor runs the length of the building.

Nickson 61 Commercial Building / Smart Design Studio

Located at the meeting point of commercial and residential zones in busy and vibrant Surry Hills, Nickson 61 presented an ideal opportunity for the adaptive reuse of existing building stock to provide a significant architectural contribution to the area. The site is located on a corner at the end of a row of terraces towards the southern end of Nickson St. It is visible from busy Cleveland St and is adjacent to both commercial and residential properties. The site contained a late-19th century terrace and a three-meter-wide vacant end lot. This lot was originally occupied by a free-standing dwelling that had been demolished to make way for an access lane.

Located in the heart of Bondi, Hall 10 is a beautifully sculpted new building for Sydney’s most famous beachside suburb. Comprising of 29 apartments atop ground-floor retail, there is something both arresting and classical in the swooping gestures of the grand vertical bays that line Hall Street. This is a building that sits comfortably at the junction of urban and beach living and behind the façade is clever planning that unlocks the potential of this site.

Fig Tree Pocket / Smart Design Studio

Fig Tree Pocket is an enclave of four buildings arranged around three green gardens, each with a unique character and purpose. The architecture is modern and classical at the same time, created through a limited palette coupled with an architecture of rhythm and unity. The building forms are created through consideration of passive solar design, privacy, access to views, and natural cross-ventilation. They were designed in harmony with the landscape and therefore have a restrained elegant demeanor.

Lena House / Smart Design Studio

Smart Design Studio was engaged by a repeat client to breathe new life into a grand Victorian terrace in Sydney. Central to the transformation was the conversion of an existing single-story garage into a contemporary infill structure that houses spacious stairs and lifts connecting all five levels. A narrow full-height slot window connects the historic facade to the clearly expressed new brick form.

Town Hall House / Smart Design Studio

Town Hall House is exemplary of Sydney Brutalist architecture. Designed by Ancher, Mortlock and Woolley in 1977, the 23-storey tower was built behind Sydney Town Hall to provide a central location for Sydney Council. The building now accommodates approximately one thousand City of Sydney staff and is a high profile element of the City’s corporate presentation and customer service ethos.

Arlington Grove Residential Building / Smart Design Studio

Catalysed by the extension of Sydney’s light rail to Dulwich Hill, and a consequential land rezoning for medium-density housing, Smart Design Studio’s Masterplan for Arlington Grove realises a beautifully landscaped residential precinct. This former industrial site has been converted into 246 apartments and a retail space arrayed around leafy courtyards and lanes. At an urban scale the site is conceived of as a considered edge to Johnson Park which sits to the north-west and, at a finer grain, a continuation of the street network to the south-east.

Regent House / Smart Design Studio

The transformation at Regent has a lot to do with light. The house was laid out in a traditional Victorian format with characteristically dark front rooms. A skylight now spans the length of the kitchen, and the formal rooms open onto the airy new combined living space. A double height light reveal floods the dining room and boys’ room above with additional light.

The Roc Rail Operations Centre / Jacobs + Smart Design Studio

The new Rail Operations Centre for Sydney Trains was designed by Jacobs in association with Smart Design Studio. The concept for the building was born from a very specific brief, which called for a vast top-lit, solid-walled control room atop several floors of open commercial workspace. This presented an opportunity to create a unique building that positively contributed to the new urban fabric of the Green Square city center, expressing its function as a piece of railway infrastructure.

Austin is the refurbishment of a rundown warehouse into a new mixed development in the heart of Surry Hills. The existing warehouse building has been given a new lease of life, reorganizing its interior with a new extended ground level commercial space, two levels of high quality residential apartments, and a lower ground floor car park. The site is located in the inner-city fringe of Surry Hills, which is characterised by warehouses and Victorian terraces houses that in recent years have housed artist’s studios, galleries and creative work spaces.

This house on the south coast of New South Wales was designed as one of a pair of modern beach houses occupying a greenfield site overlooking beautiful Gerringong beach. The site is part of a new land release on the edge of a sleepy coastal town. From its elevated position, the house enjoys 270˚ views of the ocean, adjacent headland and evergreen hinterland beyond, which form part of the Great Dividing Range. The setting is breathtaking.
