"We all miss out when anyone thinks that the National Gallery is not for them. Selldorf Architects' thoughtful interventions make the Gallery entrance lighter, more welcoming, and more visible as a public space. We hope many visitors may step inside for the first time, and those who have come before can experience a different start to their visit and view of our collection." - Sir Gabriele Finaldi, Director of the National Gallery. The National Gallery's new main entrance opens to the public on May 10th. Designed by Selldorf Architects, a New York practice led by Annabelle Selldorf, in close collaboration with Purcell heritage architects, it is a key element in the £85m NG200 Welcome building programme initiated to mark the National Gallery's 200th anniversary. It will enable the Gallery to receive its millions of annual visitors, substantially increased from when the Sainsbury Wing was first conceived. The renovated Sainsbury Wing will improve access for all while enhancing the public realm in Trafalgar Square. Security measures at the Sainsbury Wing will be unobtrusive and wayfinding intuitive. The project includes a spacious café, restaurant, and bookshop.

Located at 8 South 4th Street, One Domino Square is Selldorf Architects' first residential skyscraper in the world and features connected 55-story and 39-story towers covered in shimmering porcelain tiles, giving it an alluring complexity. The façade acts as a mirror capturing and reflecting the site's remarkable light, the ever-changing water of the East River, and the dynamic natural surroundings of Domino Park. The project's eye-catching design and two towers place it in dialogue with the skylines of Brooklyn and Manhattan and the rest of the Domino Sugar Factory site. The Condominium tower also boasts sweeping and unmatched views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Williamsburg bridges.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) in La Jolla traces its origins to philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. Her last home, a modern oceanfront dwelling completed in 1916 by Irving Gill, served as the Museum’s first location. Since opening in 1941, the Museum has undergone several architecturally distinct expansions; Mosher & Drew completed a series of expansions in 1950, 1960, and again in the late 1970s; and Venturi Scott Brown & Associates completed a renovation of MCASD’s La Jolla location in 1996. However, as the Museum’s art collection continued to expand, the building’s galleries became inadequate to display its holdings. In 2014 Selldorf Architects was tasked with developing new architecture that would expand and enhance spaces for art and the public. The new design includes the renovation of 28,000 square feet of existing spaces, as well as the addition of 46,400 square feet of new spaces to MCASD, effectively doubling the Museum’s existing square footage. Selldorf Architects’ new plan provides significantly more gallery space for the collection, creates a more welcoming and clear entry, and gives greater coherence to the site enhancing the Museum’s connection to its spectacular coastal setting.

This 30,000 sf gallery for contemporary art is located in West Chelsea, a former industrial neighborhood now home to art galleries, new iconic architectural developments, and the High Line. The neighborhood’s industrial heritage inspired the simplicity and monumentality of the building’s design which echoes the disciplined forms of surrounding warehouse buildings. Made from exposed concrete, the façade is both rough and refined—having the grittiness to resonate with industrial structures but also the elegance and craftsmanship to create a unique and refined identity for the gallery. On the ground floor, a sliding teak storefront system allows the base of the building to open for art access. Teak, which is also used for the window frames on upper floors, creates a warm contrast to the rough texture and cool tones of the concrete.
