Nestled in Terrebonne, Québec, this riverside home was designed to integrate seamlessly with its long, narrow plot—a remnant of old agricultural land—while making the most of the breathtaking view of the Mille-Îles River. Given the proximity of neighboring houses, the design prioritizes privacy and openness, ensuring unobstructed views of the river while shielding side perspectives. The result is a square, single-story structure, framed by concrete walls on the sides and fully open to the water. Rising above, the master suite introduces a vertical element to the composition.

On each floor, both in the existing building and its extension, a new interface with the collections and the city is proposed. The experience of the library becomes a rich path oscillating between projection and introversion.

The site consists of a 20 240 square metre parcel of land that is located at an important university entry point. With this in mind the building has been designed to act as a gateway to the southeast edge of the campus, engaging the community with a ground floor that will be open, transparent, inviting, and one that will showcase the public function. Nearby developments include University Endowment Lands/UBC residential communities on the East of Wesbrook, the Life Sciences Building to the North of Agronomy Road and “Agronomy knoll” open space to the west. This open space terminates the mid-block greenway that connects the southern part of campus, through UBC athletic facilities, to the Health Science Precinct.

To transform this seventies era, modern heritage building (formerly a National Bank) into a new space dedicated to contemporary fashion, the first step taken by the architects was to simplify the overall structure, which had been subjected over the years to a series of additions and renovations. The building's interior was thus stripped to its original brutalist structure, which revealed itself to be surprisingly striking. The sculpted, corrugated concrete of the vault and mezzanine, the structural supports, and the original exterior brick together became the mineral shell from which the project took shape.
