The House of Trusses was the result of a renovation in a small country residence in the interior of São Paulo with a very lean budget. The main demands of the clients were a more open and fluid space and the desire to have 3 suites in the house - originally there were 3 bedrooms, but only one suite. The original plan already split the program into two distinct volumes separated by the entrance hall and an internal courtyard. On one side, the common areas and on the other, the bedrooms.

The stone house is on a plot of land with an almost square shape and a steep slope to the street. The solution was to bring the house as far to the front as possible and thus reduce the area occupied by the car access, freeing up land at the back for leisure and garden areas. The house was then located 3.5m below street level, which allows direct access from the ground floor to the garden and pool area. Large stones were removed from underground during the work, but the largest remained on the ground and can be seen from the living and dining areas.

The difficult plot, with accentuated slope, exuberant native forest, and some rock formations guided the implantation of this residence. The general concept was not to promote large earthworks. It was essential to position the house at a level that would allow sunlight to reach it since the lot is completely surrounded by large trees. So the main floor was positioned at street level.

The project program was to design new leisure and social area for a family in an already built residence. The project should include a swimming pool, a solarium, and a covered area that would accommodate a full kitchen, a dining area, a living room, and a dressing room. The space should be as wide and open as possible, in order to explore the surrounding views.

The main concept of spatial organization of this country house was the maximum integration between interior and exterior and also between the social areas. As a result, in a large continuous plan are: the living and dining areas, kitchen, terrace, swimming pool and the garden. The sliding doors in the main room open completely and are essential to allow this integration.

The plot is located on the banks of the Itupararanga dam and the house was implanted in such a way as to explore, to the maximum, it’s beautiful views. The extensive program was accommodated in 2 main volumes: one for the intimate areas and the other for the social and service ones. On the axis of the two volumes is the main entrance to the residence. The transparency of the two aligned facades allows the view of the dam from its arrival. On the opposite side of the entrance was positioned a water mirror. It reflects the sunlight and contributes to the control of temperature and humidity.

The main modification in the renovation of this residence built in the 1940s was on the ground floor. The living and dining rooms were at the front and the kitchen at the back. The center of the plant was occupied by an uncovered service courtyard, the staircase to the upper level, the distribution corridor and a guest toilet. This whole central set, apart from the staircase, was demolished and the service courtyard was covered by glass and incorporated into the social area of the residence that lacked better natural light.
