Located around 45 minutes from the city center of Bandung, Indonesia, nestled on top of a sloping contour overlooking a valley surrounded by lush hills, the Jiwa villa was designed to be an escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Various species of wood, concrete bricks, and black-painted steels are chosen as the primary materials for the three-story villa in order to blend in with the surrounding environment as well as give guests the chance to break away from their daily routines and unwind. The villa was designed to accommodate three renting scenarios where guests can book the large studio room on the first floor; rent two junior suites on the third floor along with living space on the second; or book all three floors at once to accommodate larger groups.

With a futuristic design jutting out of a rooftop garden, this three-story, three-bedroom house in Bandung City, Indonesia is a project like no other. The client wished for a one-of-a-kind, sleek, and modern-looking house while being faithful to the ancient Chinese traditional geomancy practice of Feng Shui. Due to ancient wisdom, before the design process began, the site was divided into nine equal sections, representing the eight cardinal points and their center.

The Drum Room - Located in a 200sqm garden of an existing hotel, the client wished to build three cabins on the property which would serve as honeymoon suites. Adding to the challenge was the fact that the existing hotel had to remain open to guests during construction and thus noise and the flow of workers and materials to and from the site must be kept to a minimum. Wood is the primary material chosen for the project to avoid the need for a wet construction which might be unsightly for the staying guests of the hotel. The use of a wide range of wood with different shades of brown also provided some much-needed textures and complementary colors to the otherwise mostly white, existing buildings.

The project is a rework of an on-going hotel construction from the previous design that actually has already in topping-off position. Basically the client wanted to recompose the almost finish facade to seamlessly connect all the seemingly undesired result, such as the very obvious four balconies exposed from the main road, and to tackle groups of air-con machine stick to the perimeter wall exposed from the side road.

On a sloppy narrow land measuring 6,5 x 25 meter, 3 programs were built within steps and planter boxes arranged naturally as a hardscape stretched from the lowest to the highest point of the land. They are 2 lofts serves as guest houses and a 2 story house for the property owner at the top. The unfriendly 30 degrees contour created more than 10 meter height differences between facades that emerged from the two roads attached at both ends of the stretch, and it was in fact treated as the site power which brought up into the site planning as the major theme of how the building masses should perform and interact within each other.
