The volume separates itself from the surrounding commercial buildings and focuses on the green space around the old tree. The parts of the building used during the daytime are positioned in the northern access level of the site. These ground-floor living areas are preceded by generous covered terraces on the garden side. The spatial center is arranged around a fireplace, which is assigned to both the kitchen and living room.

To achieve this symbiotic relationship, we make the architectural event takes place as a consolidation or intensification of a (various) moment(s) within the park.

Residence Villa Drei Birken is located on a hillside at the end of a residential area in the Dolomites. The Villa, built in 1960 and renovated in the 80’s, originally consisted of a simple and low volume with owner’s apartment and four holiday flats. The new extension adds six holiday apartments as well as functional and common spaces. The facade opens through a V-shaped surface from the mostly closed North facade to the completely glazed South facade, facing the sun and the panoramic view of the Dolomites.

Sunken Ground looks at concepts present in Shouzou gardens tradition, such as the rock, the outcrop and the occidental equivalent of the grotto to then travel in space and time to the image of hanging gardens and further on to the concept of a sunken courtyard.

The project, which broke ground this past July, will twist and fold across the green landscape. Future dinners will enjoy meals featuring local ingredients and in-house produce (which they will also have the opportunity to pick themselves), echoing the sustainable approach taken by the rest of the park.
This project was conceived to fulfill a two-part problematic: (1) Residence Alma--a Tyrolean guest house with 6 holiday apartments from the 1960s adorned with a pitched roof--was due for a common circulation and service core, and (2) the project architect, Ulla Hell, was looking for a new home for her young family of five in the mountain community of Sesto, Alto Adige. The result: an under-utilized roof space gave way to an angular crown, connected to a ground floor reception space and architectural office by the host’s renovated spine.
