Given the isolated nature of the site, our team knew the project would be logistically complex.

Designed as a getaway for a nature enthusiast young family of four, the architecture features two nearly identical volumes mirrored along a long, narrow boardwalk that connects the access road to the winding nature trails beyond.

The site presented horizontal driving rain and harsh southeastern winds upon our first visit which gave our design team a keen awareness of the extreme weather that the Gulf of St. Lawrence could offer. After a very brief introduction to our new client, we were invited to find cover within the harshly weathered seasonal cottage that previously existed on the site. This strongly weathered structure gave further insight into the dramatic climactic conditions of this location along the Bay of Chaleur in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

The Back Bay Joinery Shops are located in the culturally rich community of Terence Bay, Nova Scotia. The shops provide a creative space for our firm to test, develop and construct design ideas. In collaboration with our design team, our skilled carpenters and cabinet makers use these shops to develop architecture models, scale design detail mock-ups, and fabricate much of the furniture and millwork that can be found in the buildings we create. The programmatic goal of the project was to create spaces that enable a fluid and efficient workflow between design, fabrication, and finishing.

The aim of this project was to redesign and reconstruct the envelope of a dated home in Halifax's West End. Over the decades this residence was the subject of a number of poorly executed renovations and as a result our team aimed to strip the layers of vinyl and wood cladding back to the original shiplap sheathing and rebuild the exterior of the home with the intention of creating a project that was sustainable in both design and construction practices. Using only the highest quality products, the envelope of this house was rebuilt with wood as the number one material choice. The main house volume was clad in Maibec's Rabbited Bevel siding with the EM Plus installation system and the front and rear accent volumes were clad in locally sourced rough sawn Hemlock. The final result is a strikingly contemporary residence with a sustainable material palette that will certainly stand the test of time.

This project is located in the historic South End of Halifax, Nova Scotia, near the cities largest municipal park. The project was a complete redesign and transformation of a dated house in a traditional neighborhood into a contemporary residence. The design intent was to pay homage to the historical neighborhood by maintaining the original form of the structure while modernizing the aesthetic and detailing. We endeavored to create a home that suited the client’s contemporary taste and lifestyle while remaining perceptive to the surroundings.
