PARTISANS form materials. In their early projects, they sculpted Cedar for the Grotto Sauna, CNC'd Mahogany for Bar Raval, until very recently at their Canvas House, for which they worked with masons to place over 16,200 bricks onto a custom square-shaped "Voxel-Bond" pattern reminiscent of the dot paintings of artist Larry Poons. Mere months later, in January 2024, Alex Josephson and his team at PARTISANS revealed a digitally fabricated limestone facade for Royal de Versailles Jeweller’s new Rolex boutique in Toronto. "Stone is future heritage," says Josephson, "it's having a renaissance."

Canvas House subtly stands apart within its neighborhood of Forest Hill in Toronto. Operating as both a house and a vessel for the owner's contemporary art collection, Canvas House embodies the revered pieces of art it contains through an innovative sculptural façade. This square house - surrounded by Georgian homes - exhibits a monochromatic undulating brick façade that differs from the surrounding symmetrical and conventional residences.

The site is located in a protected natural habitat; Working with environmental and conservation authorities on the project was a challenge but also an inspiration for the project. Building such a structure with a hidden beam ninety feet long and a cantilevered green roof was one design challenge. The second was the cradle and stair in a thin shell steel structure. Getting permits and then getting through the engineering and materiality challenges of the noted architectural elements were a huge relief to achieve at the level we did. We are really happy and proud of the outcomes.

Gusto 501 is the latest restaurant by acclaimed restaurateur Janet Zuccarini located in downtown Toronto. PARTISANS was tasked with the responsibility to create an unprecedented bar and restaurant experience that is sculptural, experimental, and highly functional. Taking inspiration from the industrial neighborhood and the footprint of the previous car garage, PARTISANS designed a striking contemporary landmark for the trendy neighborhood. The facade is a massive wall of glass that hyper glides to open and create natural ventilation for the restaurant, which is framed by two walls made of terracotta and steel. Inspired by Zuccarini’s Italian background, PARTISANS worked with terracotta to make a major statement for the interior’s aesthetics.

The blue waters of Lake Huron—located north of Toronto— complement its majestic surroundings and offer a dream-like location for a retreat. A sensual environment, its serene landscape reminds the temporary dwellers of the harmony that exist beyond human possibilities. When PARTISANS team met on site, with a new client for designing and constructing a potential Sauna, they knew that their most prominent challenge was to make a free-standing structure that not only respected, but also matured from the context.

After designing Bar Raval, Toronto’s critically acclaimed Spanish pintxo boite, PARTISANS reunited with Chef Grant van Gameren and cocktail wizard Owen Walker for an ambitious sophomore collaboration. Quetzal celebrates and preserves generations-old recipes and cooking techniques from various regions across Mexico in a luminous, vaulted space that pays homage to the country’s traditional mercados. The College Street restaurant is fueled exclusively by a wood-burning fire and promises to redefine how Mexican food is prepared and experienced in Canada.

Bar Raval is a 21^st-century response to Spanish Art Nouveau design. The brainchild of celebrated Canadian chef Grant van Gameren and wunderkind mixologists Mike Webster and Robin Goodfellow, Raval introduces Toronto to the “pintxo” bar—a tapas-style bar that is a cornerstone of social and gastronomic culture in northern Spain.
