Footsteps is a pre-school designed for the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Palmerston North. It is located on a large property in a commercial/retail area, backing onto a local primary school. The building occupies half the site with car parking and garden areas to the north. The building has been pushed to the street edge to engage with passers-by, different from the ‘big box' retail outlets nearby, which sit behind large car-parks.

The house is located in a large new suburban subdivision in Wellington, on a long and slender site located between the road and a planted valley reserve containing the beginnings of the Porirua Stream. The overall subdivision consists of mainly kitset and building company housing, finished in shades of cream, beige and grey, waiting until planting grows tall enough to soften it.

This small, standalone structure sits at the Southern end of a 243m2 property in Berhampore. The existing house is a compact two-bedroom Victorian cottage and is occupied by a couple and their two young sons. Space in the house is at a premium, increasingly so as the boys grow older. The new Studio is designed to provide flexible additional space such as catering for children’s play, as a place for a peaceful retreat, study or overflow accommodation. Whilst it is separate from the house at the end of the rear yard, it is visually connected and linked by sheltered outdoor space.

Te Horo Bach: Is a small (87m2) holiday house for a family of four. A retreat, located an hours drive north of Wellington on wild and beautiful dune-lands in a newly developed coastal subdivision with large section sizes. It is a small economically planned fibro and batten clad building that has its design roots partly in the NZ bach tradition, with an explorative use of form, color and material. As part of the subdivision rules, there was a limited color palette available.

A medium density housing development on a small 564 sq.m Mount Victoria site in central Wellington, New Zealand. There are seven single-level apartments and one two-level apartment, spread over three stories, with a clock tower defining the street corner. The complex sits over a below grade carpark with light timber framing clad in corrugated iron and plastered concrete panels. These provide a variety of textures that help relate the building to its context.

This small holiday bach looks over the dune tops to the Esplanade Reserve in Waikanae, New Zealand. It was designed for a family who have owned the property for more than 30 years. An uninsulated 2 storey cabin was altered, insulated, reclad and extended.

The family had lived in this early 1900’s Villa for several years before embarking on alterations. It was atypical villa layout, rooms running down each side of a central hallway with a viewto the laundry, toilet and kitchen areas at the rear. These received the best late sun, but were nestled up against a retaining wall holding up the bank rising up to the rear of the site. The house felt disconnected from the rear of the property and the owners needed extra living space and 2 more bedrooms for their growing family.

The property is located in Wellington, New Zealand. It sits just below the road facing east, looking over the botanical gardens out to Wellington Harbour. A neighbouring house sits much higher to the north with another lower to the south. The site loses sun directly to the north, but receives both generous morning and afternoon sun and being set down from the road the prevailing northwesterly winds blow over the top. The house is laid out around 2 main outside areas, east and west.
