Deceptively simple in form, its robust materiality provides a protective shield for the inhabitants and a vessel for the sculptural forms and delicate materiality within. The journey through the house, comprised over four levels, is shaped by the sense of compression and expansion.

Carved into a steep undulating landscape on the shores of a man-made lake and overlooking Sorrento Golf Course, the Point Nepean House is an ambitious yet sensitive intervention to its environment. The bold eccentric form commands its presence, but its delicate timber skin, flowing parallel to the tranquil body of water is gracious. The home, with its extensive program, is a place that provides refuge and privacy, whilst simultaneously focusing on its surroundings.

Nestled amongst holiday homes on the edge of Port Phillip Bay, the Sorrento Beach House has been conceived with a nostalgia for the simple forms and materials of holiday homes of the past. Composed of five separate pavilions arranged around a central outdoor living space, the house eschews the competition for water views and focuses inwards, placing the theatre of holiday life centre stage.

Located in Paddington on the end of a strip of terrace houses dating back to the 1880s, the Concert Hall House is a highly personalised response to the clients brief for space where music can take centre stage. Reimagining the potential of a compact inner-city site, the house sits comfortably within the heritage context whilst providing dramatic interior spaces, reminiscent of great music halls.

These homes tell the story of a family and examine how large suburban blocks can be adapted to deal with generational change and the rapid rise of property prices. The site was purchased in 1972 and was the long-time family home of our clients. 40 years on, the children had grown up, moved out and the original Californian bungalow had fallen into disrepair. Circumstances arose requiring one of the sons and his young family to move back to live with their father and the decision was made to build two homes on the site so they could all live together without… living together.

Located in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy, this restoration and addition to a 150-year-old building showcases the rich history of the area and demonstrates how prioritising natural light over floor area can make the most of tight, inner-city sites. The project involves the careful restoration of a heritage listed building and a new two-storey addition to provide for two unique apartments.
