Reforma TA consists of the rehabilitation of a humble and deteriorated family home of more than 30 years. Its constructive and spatial qualities were compromised by the passage of time and opposed to the contemporary requirements of functionality and comfort requested by the client. The project presented various budgetary, technical and connotative challenges from the start, since in addition to solving leaks, humidity, subsidence of floors, cracks and poorly arranged enclosures within a reasonable cost, we had to consider that the users of the house would be a blind person with their elderly mother. This framed our criteria of accessibility, luminosity, spatial fluidity, appropriate handling of colors, textures, etc.

Between the stones and the water. A lot located in the mountain range of Los Altos, treading geographically within the city of San Bernardino, with romantic sunset views over the famous Ypacaraí lake, which has become the historical scene of the summer life of many Paraguayans, is the site where we were summoned to project a weekend house to be enjoyed by families and friends. With a rugged topography and rocky terrain, the picturesque and steep location suggested the idea of implementing the program in such a way to generate a stepped succession of terraces that allow users to enjoy the landscape from different perspectives and times of the day.

This small project is located in a residential neighbourhood in Asunción of low density and relative tranquillity, where the owner commissioned us to renovate an old house of almost vernacular characteristics and in quite deteriorated conditions, for profitable purposes. Therefore, our efforts were focused on developing a discreet project that would find a way to recycle the house, allowing it some flexibility in the spaces while fitting into a somewhat tight budget. The initial situation presented us with an unfunctional fragmented typology of clogged and annexed spaces, a lack of ventilation and natural lighting, walls without foundations and with noticeable humidity, considerable structural fissures and other anecdotal surprises, such as the presence of a cesspit in one of the rooms.

The neighbourhoods of the Asinción of yesteryear, traditional and almost timeless, are being reached by the impulse of real estate development that day after day seeks to provide options to the growing urban population. Many times it happens that the hurried venture condemns architecture to a second -or third-level of importance, giving priority to "practicality" and prejudices of insecurity that are very common in the country, which does not serve the imaginary of today's society well. We wanted this not to be the case. The situation presented a house of approximately 40 years of age and in quite deteriorated conditions that was to be reincorporated to the supply of real estate. It was already in the process of demolition, with no architectural project to follow. The urgency of time led us to make a quick diagnosis of the situation and to act with the same inertia, while developing a parallel idea that could mean - at least something - for the city.
