For a family of 4, we designed a new home. Their desire: a home that is surprising in space and experience, with the right balance of lighting and materials. The home needed to provide a context, a blank canvas for the builders' hobby of collecting art and design.

In rural Wichelen, a detached house with a classic character received a thorough facelift. The crow-stepped gable, which was covered up because of moisture problems, was repaired and returned to its original state. Nothing else was touched on the outside, except the creation of new contrasting window openings at the rear of the house. The new, double-height window maximizes the connection with the garden and the meadows behind and distances itself from the neo-style through its size and detailing.

We were charged with the design of a multifamily house on a smaller vacant plot in a semi-open development. The biggest challenge here lies in the shape of the plot: very narrow in front and widening towards the back. In addition, it also had to connect seamlessly to the adjacent blind façade of the house.

We were commissioned to furnish a third-floor duplex penthouse tailored to the needs of our clients. The unit is reminiscent of a luxury yacht, where the sleeping quarters are located below the living space and where residents can escape the daily hustle and bustle.

But it just so happened that a week after their first meeting at our office, our customers were able to buy the home of their dreams: old holiday home at the highest point of the village, in the midst of the countryside. Apart from the phenomenal views, the plot has an extra asset: a beautiful weeping willow.

Historically, Aalst is an important industrial town on the Dender. Especially the textile industry flourished a sector of which the city became the epicenter in the 18th century. A remnant of this golden age can be found along the Pierre Corneliskaai. Once a weaving mill, later transformed into a plastic factory under the wings of Tupperware and today a new showroom for designer furniture of bathroom and kitchen specialist Sterck NV.

Our clients from Aalst gave us carte blanche to design their new home. All they wanted was color throughout the house, a distinctive design, and... an orange front door. The inherent risk of designing a distinctive house is that you end up moving too far away from what people consider to be a home. So, when designing this house, we started by analyzing the elements that make up the identity of the traditional Flemish house.

In the middle of the Flemish fields, we started working on an existing single-family house and adjoining stables. Together with the owners and their recently retired parents, we transformed the existing farmhouse into two homes, one of which is a care home, where it is possible to continue to live for life. During this renovation, we endeavored to disrupt the typical Flemish rural character of the area as little as possible.

To demolish or not? That was the key question the architects had at the start of this project. The clients could not agree on the preservation of the old barn next to their house. She wanted to preserve it, he wanted to start from scratch with a new construction. Objekt Architecten combined best of both worlds and came up with an unusual, surprising design. The characteristics and qualities of the old barn were defined and combined as an added value to the new volume. The roof and inner walls of the old barn were demolished and made room for a new concrete construction. Concrete offers the right esthetical result in combination with the old brick walls by which both materials reinforce each other. Facing the budget and therefor searching for a logical way of building, the architects chose to use the structural work as a finish.
