Spatial Superposition as Resolution for the Density

Luohu, as the east node of Shenzhen's linear urban development, failed to prioritize the relationship between the city and its natural environment in its early urban planning and construction. Instead, it simply and crudely implemented modern functional and transportation planning. Buildings and urban living spaces were arranged on the land according to the demands of functionality and efficiency, with nature serving only as a backdrop to the man-made city. In this process, people (regardless of individual differences such as age, identity, gender, and background) and their activities were merely functional objects of efficiency planning.

"Old" here is both an adjective and a verb. "Old Church" is an event about time construction. The "Old Church" is the first realised public building of Arana Jiulong Lake Comminity in Huadu of Guangzhou. The original site of is a simulated church building of a "European Town" theme park. The building locates on the south-east conner of the town and faces the mainentrance of the community. Arana hopes it will become the first spiritual symbol for the community. The original building can be regarded as a local projection of the West, and its construction began roughly fifteen years ago. How to resolve the dislocation between the history reflected by the image and its construction history has become a speculative issue in the "Church" renewal project. Therefore what the church needs to construct is not space, but time.

As part of “New Campus Action”, the design attempts to re-connect the campus to its natural environment, and create a new place meaning through a very logical building strategy. The design targets to use the central-location site to inter-weave a comprehensive complex that offers a wider range of spaces for cultural and sports activities, while at the same time, re-establish the circulation, communication and sharing in the campus, and create a coexistence of human and nature

Land and Sea. Ancient China was geographically and politically centered on the mainland, the coastal areas were historically marginalized. These coastal areas, being far from the regime, gave rise to a more relaxed and diverse vernacular, and the geographical environment where land and water intersected brought about a greater sense of spontaneous and local senses. As time passes, with the expansion of the world's maritime civilization, the coastal zone gradually became the point of communication between China and foreign cultures, further enriching the physical and non-physical cultural ecology of modern coastal settlements.

EMGdotArt Foundation in Venice is located on the ground floor of Palazzo Zen, a historical building from 1537, situated along a typical canal of the Italian lagoon city. Dealing with renovation and (re-) adaptation, the 390m² space has been converted into an art gallery featuring rooms for exhibitions, conference and meetings, including a workspace for EMGdotART Foundation.

The ID Town project originates from the abandoned Honghua Dyeing Factory, locating in Dapeng New Tourist District in Shenzhen East. The 8-hector factory finds itself surrounded by the mountain near the coast of Southern Chinese Sea. The old-temple-like workshop buildings evoke one’s impression of an Acropolis in the nature. Our design starts from this special on-site ruining atmosphere in the nature.

Conservation of architecture is not only a matter of reserving history and physical space. Architectural renovation is also more than recycling old buildings for new functions. The reconversion of the former Guangdong Floating Glass Factory is an experiment of rediscovering the lost spatial existence and experience via architectural study on contemporary industrial relics. We expected new possibilities to architecture and urbanism can be unveiled for contemporary Chinese cities.
