Over 90% of the world's diamond pieces are cut in Surat, in the western Indian state of Gujarat, with the city playing host to the world's largest community of diamond workers. Most traders, however, have to commute over 250 kilometers daily by train to reach Mumbai to conduct their business, significantly impacting their cost of living and commuting as well as access to a healthy quality of life. The Surat Diamond Bourse brings this vast community together, uniting all activities of cutting, polishing, and trading under one roof. With a built-up area of 7.1 million sq. ft. occupying a 35.3-acre site, the design of the bourse redefines the conventional office building typology while establishing new sustainability benchmarks within the hot and humid climatic context of Surat.

It houses two distinct, but interrelated functional programs: residential facilities for working women and academic facilities for their vocational training. The design process was driven by a critical investigation of the building’s immediate urban and social context. It addresses Morphogenesis’ core design philosophy of sustainability that is viewed through the lens of community, culture, environment, and economics. Together, they craft a secure and vibrant learning-living habitat, that is focused on enhancing collaboration and optimizing the management and use of shared spaces and resources.

Kasauli falls in an interesting topographic and climatic zone where one needs to deal with mountainous terrain and cool winters, while summers can get as warm as the plains. The site is a highly contoured piece of land with level differences of about 100 m within the site. The neighborhood is predominantly used for agriculture and vegetation, and hence the site exists within a vast green and mountainous landscape. The organizing principle for the development is formalized keeping in mind natural swales and ridges.

Morphogenesis’ design vision for The British School, New Delhi, found inspiration in the school’s tagline – ‘An International education with an Indian soul’. With this project, Morphogenesis set out to provide a strong cultural context to the international format of education this institution provides. Located centrally in Delhi, space itself was a constraint. Its population of 650 students was to be doubled to 1300.The principal challenge was to construct the new building on the existing site without disrupting the existing school that would become redundant eventually. The only constructible space available enveloped the existing premises, presenting construction, phasing and health and safety challenges.

Through the Artisan House project, Morphogenesis looks to revive and re-establish a patronage for traditional Indian artisanal skills. India is symbolized by the diversity of its art and culture, yet with the changing paradigm there is a great need to conserve these symbols that are under a growing threat of neglect. Craft, emergent from skill and handed-down traditions is inherent in Indian culture, and is strongly representative of the global understanding of luxury today- that of the hand-made, bespoke, one that speaks of its provenance. Additionally, luxury in this project is expressed through the dexterity and beauty of spatial configurations, lending the space an experiential quality through the incorporation of craft, material, method and design.
