Recognizing Liangxi as a " city central district " grappling with insufficient school facilities, the government aimed to optimize the distribution of educational resources. The overarching goal was to establish genuinely outstanding schools that are easily accessible to the local community. As a 9-Year Schools featuring 36 primary school classes and 18 secondary school classes, the challenge extended beyond meeting standard per capita land use requirements.

Chinese cities are experiencing unprecedented changes. After about 40 years rapid construction, what follows is the renewal and reconstruction of those prompt construction products. On the one hand, it is to make up for the quality defects caused by speed, and on the other hand, it is to face the dynamic adjustment of rapidly changed daily life. Rapid construction has met people's basic functional needs, while the current adjustment bears meanings of both function and spirit. Public buildings take a substantial leading role. Relying on upgrading functions and forms, they reconstruct the critical nodes of the city and then bring new changes in a larger area and boost the quality of urban space. The relocation of the Liutan Agricultural Trade Market is a typical improvement experiment, a crucial-livelihood guarantee and a critical step to upgrade and adjust the space quality of the whole Liutan area.

When the Tianmu Mountains rush from south to north to Taihu Lake, the steep ridges and ravines of that time have slowly submerged into the vast lakeside plain at this moment. People built cities between the lake and the mountains and created the wealthiest and most romantic area in China, Jiangnan. The Southwest Elementary School is located between the mountain and the city. Taking advantage of the beauty of the landscape, it begins a construction journey of “patrolling the eaves of the wind and the moon, reclusion in landscape”.

There is an impassable boundary between physical buildings and free space in a high-density city. Under the principle of efficiency first, the using function often takes precedence over spatial interest and the two seem not to achieve symbiosis. The same goes for school buildings, where economic use of land is strictly regulated, resulting in the similarity of buildings. After the fundamental teaching units and auxiliary functions are laid out, space for free activities can no longer form a complete and continuous expression. The site is divided by buildings, in which the scale of the public space is in sharp contrast to the concentrated playing field. Buildings have little uniqueness and a clear narrative; thus, it’s easy to fall into a set of paradigms. On this basis, the school urgently needs new strategies to form new expressions and visions.

Changshu is a vital textile industry gathering centre in China. In the city development process, textile workshop, represented by textile manufacturing sites, becomes the essential architectural type in the city. Changshu embroidered garment factory founded in 1979. It entirely moved to Haiyu South Road No.77 and started a glorious time in the city centre. With the rapid development of Chinese society, giving way to consumption, earth-shaking changes have taken place in industries and cities over the past few decades, which have led to the complete transformation of urban-architecture functions. Benefiting from the particular location advantages, the operation mode of the Jiangnan embroidery garment factory has gradually changed from production management to building rental, and the buildings have been used continuously and frequently. However, with the excessive use, the buildings are damaged and the infrastructure is old, which makes the buildings gradually become a negative space in the downtown. In 2019, Changshu Jiangnan Group started the transformation and renovation on the factory's existing basis to awaken its vitality and value.

The Xinsu Group Research and Development (hereinafter referred to as "R&D ") Center is the third project designed by Minax Architects for the same owner. In this design, we had the chance to grasp even more accurately the owner’s requests and taste , also combining the new building with the corporate culture. As the R&D center of the company, the building undertakes the technical research and development work of the whole group. Xinsu Group has just completed a new large-scale merger and acquisition. The R&D departments originally belonging to different companies must work together in this new R&D center. Therefore, achieving smooth communication between R&D personnel of different departments through harmonious coexistence of architecture, landscape and environment has become the focus of this design.

Drinking tea is one of the most featured activity which can fuse the functional requirements with the sense of ritual in Chinese life. In China, tea is considered as a belt that can fulfill spiritual communication between human and nature, it means that “a person stands among the woods and grass” in ancient Chinese. Tea is one symbol of Chinese Zen life, so a teahouse is not just a place for people to have tea, but also has some profound significance. We can gain the generosity of spirit in a confined space once we start to enjoying a cup of tea.
