Roast meats or siu mei, with their lacquered red sheen and sweet–savory profile, are a classic of Cantonese cuisine and part of the everyday memory of Guangdong cities. Yet in public perception, roast meat shops are often associated with limited space, modest environments, and fast consumption, leaving little room for social interaction.

In 2020, Nikon commissioned LUKSTUDIO to design its first China flagship on Shanghai's Huaihai Road, followed by additional stores in Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Beijing. In 2024, LUKSTUDIO returned to renovate and expand the Shanghai store, responding to the brand's evolving image and creating a space that would engage a growing community of photography enthusiasts. Over the years, LUKSTUDIO's approach to brand space design has evolved from symbolic uses of materials to a refined minimalism. The Shanghai renovation continues the design language developed for Beijing's "The Urban Viewfinder," emphasizing purity, materiality, and light. Through this approach, the project expresses Nikon's values of technology, nature, and sustainability, while establishing a vibrant community hub for photographers to gather, explore, and share their passion.

A social club fitting all types of motivation. The first main characteristic of play, that it is free, is in fact, freedom. A second characteristic is that play is not ‘ordinary’ or ‘real’ life. It is rather a stepping out of ‘real’ life into a temporary sphere of activity with a disposition all of its own”. Johan Huizinga, Homo Ludens. Socialization through motor activities is not a new concept. However, in our new pandemic era, there’s an increasing demand for different physical activities as everyone develops their own concept of health and wellness. BeInfinity is a platform that combines professional sports, fitness training, and recreational gatherings. At its Wuhan flagship, Lukstudio experiments with colors and geometry to create a social club fitting all types of motivation.

The brand name of Sukhothai Hotel is derived from the first independent dynasty in Thailand's history - Sukhotai, which means "the dawn of happiness". In 2017, Sukhothai opened its first location in China at the heart of Shanghai with the concept of an “urban oasis”, bringing modern urbanites the traditional Southeast Asian hospitality with a contemporary twist. Lukstudio was brought onboard to renovate the outdoor area connecting to the existing bar and restaurant. The site is located right off the main street entrance on Wei Hai Road, a spot where guests pass through to enter the hotel lobby. Part of the site was originally used as an outdoor terrace for the ZUK bar and the rest were green hedges. An intricately designed water pond with four bronze Pagoda sculptures was hidden behind large planters, serving as an outdoor view for the all-day dining restaurant only. Reinforcing the hospitality concept of an “urban oasis”, Lukstudio transformed the previously inactive site into a leisure garden with two all-weathered pergolas. Along the street, a new glass barrier with bamboo screen is installed to filter out the hustle and bustle. The redesigned landscape is filled with layers of leafy vegetation, replacing the original flat planters.

The store is located at the corner of a Shikumen building on Huaihai Road, a trendy neighborhood where young people gather. Conventional camera shops are designed often either as a cultural gallery or a technological laboratory, both could be intimidating to the common shoppers. LUKSTUDIO aims to create an inviting environment where one could dream about the next outdoor adventure. The overall retail experience has been tailored to introduce the brand, the products, and the community on three separate levels, each a quadrant in the plan. Given the different spatial requirements, three different scenes have been created, each with its own design attributes. The common connection is the rammed earth background mimicking Danxia landform, a natural landscape that changes colors on different levels.

Based on the idea that a kitchen is the heart of a home, Lukstudio creates a culinary village where kitchen appliances are displayed in four domestic settings, alongside a gallery, a cooking classroom, a VIP lounge, and a multi-functional courtyard. The design has transformed the original 1000-sqm mechanical floor into a complete brand experience for manufacturer Arda.

Through a series of clean white volumes, the design purifies the existing chaotic site to create a calm yet inviting atmosphere.

The ‘Modular Lilong’ was designed for Value Retail China to showcase ‘Chuang x Yi’; a concept brand that provides a platform for Chinese fashion designers. The 150 sqm site is located in Yioulai Shanghai Village; a sister to Bicester Village in London - both global shopping developments. The intent of ‘Chuang x Yi’ is to create a retail experience specifically related to the context of Shanghai.
